CMS Publishes Program Year 2023 Open Payments Data On June 28, 2024, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published Open Payments Program Year 2023 data, along with newly submitted and updated payment records for Program Years 2017 - 2022. The data is accessible on the Open Payments Search Tool. Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes transparency and accountability by making information about the financial relationships between applicable manufacturers and group purchasing organizations (GPOs) and certain health care providers available to the public. Through Open Payments the American public has much more transparent insight into financial relationships in the nations health care system. Drug and medical device companies are held accountable by law to report certain financial relationships for the purpose of the Open Payments program. Health care providers have a voluntary role in Open Payments and may review, affirm, or if necessary, dispute data that has been reported about them. (Back to top) Program Year 2023 Summary For Program Year 2023, CMS published $12.75 billion in payments and ownership and investment interests made by applicable manufacturers and GPOs to physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses and teaching hospitals. This amount is comprised of 15.64 million records attributable to 630,384 physicians, 309,438 non-physician practitioners (NPPs), and 1,225 teaching hospitals. Payments are reported in three payment categories: general payments, research payments, and ownership or investment interests. Payments in the three major reporting categories for Program Year 2023 are: $3.29 billion in general (i.e., non-research related) payments $8.12 billion in research payments $1.34 billion of ownership or investment interests held by physicians or their immediate family members The active program years data includes a total of 84.05 million records amounting to $72.80 billion published through the Open Payments program. Program Year 2023 marks the third Open Payments publication that includes data about physician assistants and advanced practice nurses. In Program Year 2023 physicians received 65.28% of the combined number of general and research payment records; NPPs received 33.74% of payment records, and teaching hospitals received 0.98% of payment records. 48.12% of the combined general and research payment dollar value for Program Year 2023 was attributed to physicians, 47.60% was attributed to teaching hospitals and only 4.28% of the dollar value was attributed to physician assistants and advanced nurse practitioners. The Open Payments data will be refreshed in 2025 to reflect any updates made to the data between now and December 31, 2024. Action taken on the data between now and December 31, 2024 will be reflected in the annual data refresh or in a later publication. Archived Data Reminder Data publication occurs for five years from the first publication of the program year data.
