We’re talking about 7,500 athletes age 30 and older, competing in 30 sports, including track and field, tennis, basketball, pickleball and cycling. Pan-Am Games: The Greater Cleveland Sports Commission will host the 2024 Pan-American Masters Games in Cleveland in 2024, reports Marc Bona. The multisport event is anticipated to be largest international gathering in the city’s history and will be the first time the PAMG has been held in the United States. Clinic financials: Patient revenue has continued to increase this year at the Cleveland Clinic but not enough to keep up with growing wages and other costs. Julie Washington reports that net operating income is down sharply: $91.4 million in operating income from January through June after making $775.8 million during the same six months a year earlier. Mental health help: In May, Gov. Mike DeWine announced a plan to spend millions in federal coronavirus recovery funds to help therapy, social work, addiction counseling, psychology and other critically needed mental health students pay for their degrees. Yet fall semester has arrived at many Ohio colleges and that money hasn’t been approved. Laura Hancock reports advocates for mental health and drug treatment services say the delay is only exacerbating the need. Candidacy rejected: Republican Secretary of State Frank LaRose’s office has rejected the candidacy of a conspiracy theorist and podcaster Terpsehore “Tore” Maras, who was running to challenge him in the Nov. 8 election, citing issues with the voter signatures she submitted with her candidate petitions, Andrew Tobias reports. |

Sewer overflow: Heavy rain Monday night caused a combined sewer overflow at Edgewater Beach, the second occurrence this month, reports Kaylee Remington. Rain overwhelmed the system, which sent sewage into Lake Erie. Emergency landing: A single-engine plane, attempting to make an emergency landing Tuesday morning, crashed into trees near Mayfield Middle School, reports Kaylee Remington. Three people on the plane were taken to local hospitals for minor injuries in the crash, which happened at about 11 a.m. Stadium survey: The Cleveland Browns along with the Haslam Sports Group have released a survey asking fans what enhancements they want to see at FirstEnergy Stadium. Though there no firm plans regarding any future renovations at the stadium, the survey does hint at possibilities, Megan Sims reports. Brownfield meeting: Cuyahoga County’s Department of Development is holding a public meeting today to discuss remediation work at a current brownfield being redeveloped into mixed-use housing, reports Kaitlin Durbin. Alaska Airlines: Alaska Airlines, which two months ago launched service between Cleveland and Seattle, is already making plans to expand the route with a second daily flight between the two cities in 2023, Susan Glaser reports. The second flight will be seasonal, operating June 15 through Sept. 5, the peak months for leisure travel to the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. WKYC: Christi Paul will make her local TV debut on Sept. 12, anchoring a new hour-long 5 p.m. weekday newscast on WKYC Channel 3. The former CNN personality will anchor the program, called “What’s Now,” alongside Carmen Blackwell, Joey Morona reports. BBB: In the wake of President Joe Biden’s announcement about student loan forgiveness, the Greater Cleveland Better Business Bureau is warning people about loan-related scams, Sean McDonnell reports. |

Tax scheme: A former top official at an Independence wealth-management company is accused of taking part in a scheme that provided a tax shelter for wealthy clients by making it look like they contributed to a charity, reports Adam Ferrise. Cullen Fischel, a former chief financial officer of Associated Concepts Agency, is charged in federal court in Cleveland with conspiring to defraud the IRS. Hammock death: Authorities in Oregon are investigating the death of a student who died in a hammock accident Monday in an incident that appears similar to the deaths of two Cleveland Heights girls in 2020. A 19-year-old student died and a pair of 18-year-old women were injured when a masonry column collapsed at the Lewis & Clark College campus in Portland. Oberlin lawsuit: The Ohio Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to review a lower-court ruling that Oberlin College must pay $36 million to a nearby bakery that sued after the school and an administrator joined students in accusing the business owners of racism, Jeremy Pelzer reports. |
