As a rule, I support more public access to Lake Erie. More spaces for Clevelanders to swim, bike, paddleboard and just enjoy our greatest natural asset. Who could argue with that? The residents of Euclid Beach Mobile Home Park, located on the grounds of the former amusement park. Police overhaul: Cleveland officials made a wave of changes Wednesday in the wake of what they said is an inability to discipline a police officer who made antisemitic social media posts. Adam Ferrise reports the city will now conduct behavioral-based interviews of officers, monitor social media use, require bias training and collaborate with the Anti-Defamation League. Euclid Beach: Facing a possible exodus from their longtime homes, residents of a lakefront mobile home park in North Collinwood have formed a tenant union and are demanding to stay in place. And if they are forced to leave, residents are demanding ample time for planning -- and compensation for the homes they may lose, reports Courtney Astolfi. New freighter: A new freighter is sailing the Great Lakes and carrying cargo in and out of the Cuyahoga River. The Mark W. Barker, a 639-foot bulk carrier, is the 10th ship in the Interlake Steamship Co.’s fleet, headquartered in Middleburg Heights. It’s the company’s first newly built ship since 1981, reports Sean McDonnell. Battery research: Renewable energy needs adequate and affordable battery storage to reach its full potential, because the wind doesn’t always blow and the sun doesn’t always shine. Peter Krouse reports researchers at Case Western Reserve University are working to develop the next generation of electrolytes that can render utility-size battery systems less costly, more efficient and more safe. |

Arson trial: A judge has thrown out one count against the man accused of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend, killing their son and her daughter in a fire and then killing a neighbor as he fled in July 2019. Cory Shaffer reports Cuyahoga County Judge Timothy McCormick found Armond Johnson not guilty because of a lack of evidence of an aggravated arson charge in the death of Takeyra Collins. Tax evasion: The chief financial officer for a company that owns a chain of Irish pubs is accused of falsifying documents to avoid paying $1 million in sales tax to eight states, including Ohio. Adam Ferrise reports that prosecutors say Ciaran Dillon of Solon shaved off about a month of sales tax each year from Claddagh Irish Pubs that operated around the Midwest for nearly a decade. |
