Announcements UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA Call for Projects: UBC Sustainability Scholars Summer 2025 Program The UBC Sustainability Hub invites you to submit a project proposal for the summer 2025 Sustainability Scholars program. The Sustainability Scholars program provides graduate students and project partners a unique opportunity to co-investigate solutions to real-world sustainability problems. Scholars benefit from the opportunity to work with a mentor and apply their academic program knowledge and research skills in ways that contribute to advancing the partner organization’s sustainability goals. Funding and work direction is provided by the partner organization, and the recruitment and logistics are handled by the UBC Sustainability Scholars Program Manager. This is a great opportunity to tap into the enthusiasm and expertise of a grad student to help advance some of your sustainability-related work! The proposal deadline for the summer 2025 program is November 15. For more information about the program, costs, how to propose a project and to view previous projects, visit Sustainability Scholars Program (ubc.ca). FEDERATION OF CANADIAN MUNICIPALITIES The Green Municipal Fund from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) is open! This fund can go towards the development of climate adaptation plans, climate-focused asset management strategies, community-wide climate risk assessments, and capacity-building initiatives. This presents an opportunity for local governments and Modern Treaty Nations to stack funding with other sources, such as the Local Government Climate Action Program (LGCAP) funding. In addition to actions already being taken to meet climate action objectives, the Province requests that local governments and Modern Treaty Nations also consider continuing to explore/implement natural asset infrastructure inventories and/or natural asset infrastructure solutions. The deadline to apply is November 29, 2024. FRASER BASIN COUNCIL AND BC CLIMATE ACTION TOOLKIT Help Improve the Climate Action Toolkit! The Climate Action Toolkit is a vital resource that supports local governments in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and advancing climate resilience. To ensure it continues to meet your needs, we're conducting a User Experience Questionnaire to gather insights on how the Toolkit is performing. Your feedback will help enhance the Toolkit’s strengths and identify areas for improvement, making it an even more effective resource in the fight against climate change. We invite you to take a few minutes to complete this anonymous survey by November 30th. Your input will help local governments take meaningful climate action! Link: Climate Action Toolkit User Experience Questionnaire UNION OF BC MUNICIPALITIES Feedback Sought on Potential Changes to Responsible Conduct Framework Local elected officials and CAOs are invited to provide comment on the potential for change to the framework that supports responsible conduct in BC. The invitation follows on a discussion paper from UBCM and the Local Government Management Association that explores the potential of mandatory codes of conduct and models for their administration and enforcement. The paper follows a succession of UBCM resolutions that call for changes to the responsible conduct framework for local elected officials. The deadline for feedback has been extended to December 1, 2024. Co-authors of the paper – Local Government Management Association and UBCM – are inviting feedback from Councils/Boards, individual elected officials and CAOs on two questions: Should the Province be requested to develop legislation mandating codes of conduct modelled on established best practices for all local governments in BC? Are legislated changes needed to support code of conduct administration and enforcement? And, if so, what factors do you think are most important to the success of a new approach to code administration and enforcement? Responses from Councils, Boards or individual elected officials may be sent to Paul Taylor, UBCM Director of Communications. Chief Administrative Officers may provide their comments to Candace Witkowskyj, LGMA Executive Director. To read more about the background and the current framework click here. |
