City Council gets approval powers: Voters on Tuesday gave the New Orleans City Council the power to approve the mayor's appointments to run key city departments. Ben Myers has the story. No surprises: In Louisiana's Congressional elections, everything pretty much went as expected, with Steve Scalise, John Kennedy, Garret Graves and Clay Higgins winning reelection, and Troy Carter and Julia Letlow winning their first full terms in Congress. Mark Ballard has this dispatch from the nation's capital. State and local elections: Royce Duplessis edged Mandy Landry for a state Senate seat representing the city. In Jefferson Parish, the city of Harahan reelected its mayor and has familiar faces on the council and a new police chief, while five School Board races were decided. In St. Tammany, two School Board members were defeated, and a new mayor was elected in Pearl River. In Plaquemines, Parish President Kirk Lepine is out and two of his challengers are in a runoff. IRS investigates: The IRS has asked a federal court in New Orleans to compel developer Joe Jaeger's foundation to produce documents relating to its sale of a historic, South Rampart Street property to a group in which former Saints quarterback Drew Brees has invested.
