Nuclei Systems technology is now leveraging the SEGGERs emRun runtime library for its MCU development and deployment. emRun is a complete C runtime library, and Nuclei Systems is using the toolchain for its RISC-V-based IPs. The move will bring with it a powerful set of tools, that SEGGER is known for. The code is reduced in overall size, allowing for smaller MCU size and less on-chip memory needs.  .

Microcontrollers In Automotive and RISC-V


Hello Circuit Cellar fans, it is simply the time of the EV. The markets seem to be racing against each other to reach the goal of the automotive MCU that has the smallest footprint, is easiest to develop, and can run the systems in the EV, the most efficiently. Not the most apparent winners, but this week we look at some of the latest developments in Automotive MCUs and RISC-V entering the field with robust efforts to outdo the competition.

Clearly the automotive industry is moving deeper into the embedded systems marketplace, with a number of car manufacturers taking on a more software-defined auto or truck. The need for smaller, more efficient code manipulation is becoming a necessity, as space constraints and code requirements grow. There is room here for an MCU family bearing the load, and including high-performance, ultra-low-power, and wireless attributes as well as mainstream use cases. RISC-V is already gearing up for a heavy push with its AndesCore automotive CPU, which comes with the functional safety certification of ISO 26262. This will greatly reduce prospective clients' time to market considerations and give the ISA a foothold in the industry.   

In the broader marketplace, many companies are teaming up early in the year for what will be a busy year in MCU development and manufacturing. The giants in microcontrollers may have some trouble staying solidly atop what is becoming a focused market. That namely is the automotive industry's need for more inclusive and safety-orientated devices and boards. When growth is at an all-time high, and demand is just as high, amidst a chip shortage, industry requirements seem to be changing by the day. The smaller microcontroller company, perhaps situated in the middle of the marketplace, might find itself in a unique position to move the market towards an automobile as an ecosystem.
