IDE for ST's STM32Cube MCU Ecosystem Available for Free STMicroelectronics (ST) is offering a free all-in-one STM32 development tool now as part of its STM32Cube software ecosystem. The STM32CubeIDE leverages ST's 2017 acquisition of embedded-development-tool vendor Atollic. It is offered under industry-standard open license terms and adds dedicated STM32-specific features to simplify and accelerate STM32 MCU-based embedded designs. These include the STM32CubeMX tool for configuring the MCU and managing the project build. The STM32Cube ecosystem boasts downloads of STM32CubeMX currently averaging more than 250,000 per year, according to ST. The complete STM32Cube ecosystem also contains the STM32CubeProgrammer for MCU programming and STM32CubeMonitor series for monitoring application behavior, as well as individual MCU-specific embedded software packages. CONTINUE READING Embedded File System Adds RAID5 Support SEGGER Microcontroller has added a RAID5 option to its emFile embedded file system to maximize data integrity and reliability. RAID5 delivers a high level of data integrity by providing an additional layer of fail-safety on top of the CRC and/or error correction used by the underlying driver or storage medium. With RAID5, the storage device is divided into several partitions, one of which holds parity information allowing data recovery in case of a partition fail. It can be used on any storage medium and the parity information can be stored on the same storage device (in a separate partition) or on a separate device. Dev Tools Extend Transportation Safety Standards Coverage IAR Systems has updated the functional safety editions of its embedded development toolchain IAR Embedded Workbench with new functional safety certificates. The new certificates add the standard EN 50657:2017 "Railways Applications - Rolling stock applications - Software on Board Rolling Stock" as well as a later revision of the "Road vehicles - Functional safety" standard called ISO 26262:2018. Functional safety is one of the most important features in many embedded systems and companies must consider development tools as an integral part of the system certification, says IAR Systems. The proof of compliance for the tools increases cost and time of development. To solve this problem, IAR Systems provides certified versions of the complete compiler and debugger toolchain IAR Embedded Workbench for Arm, Renesas RX, Renesas RL78 and Renesas RH850. Submit Your Technical Article to Circuit Cellar Magazine Circuit Cellar magazine is always looking for top-notch technical articles that help readers better understand embedded electronics technology in action. Professional engineers, academics, students and serious electronics enthusiasts are encouraged to submit articles and proposals. Whether its a project-based article, an article about a technology trend, or an analysis of a technical issue or challenge, Circuit Cellar is looking for insightful, detailed articles that help its readers do their jobs as embedded system designers. If you have an article or an article proposal, let us know! Our article submissions page provides you with our requirements and guidelines. GO TO OUR ARTICLE SUBMISSIONS PAGE Ryzen R1000 SoC Offers Dual Zen and Triple Vega Cores with a 12-25 W TDP AMD has unveiled a lower-powered version of the Ryzen Embedded V1000 SoC called the Ryzen Embedded R1000 with dual quad-threaded cores, 12-25 W TDPs, triple 4K displays and support for dual 10 GbE ports. When AMD unveiled the Ryzen Embedded V1000 in Feb. 2018, the chipmaker claimed the x86-based CPU delivered twice the performance of its earlier R-Series chips. Now, the chipmaker has introduced a stripped-down Ryzen Embedded R1000 variant with the same low power consumption as the old R-Series while still offering considerably better CPU and GPU performance. The Ryzen Embedded R1000 offers the same Zen CPU and Vega GPU cores as the V1000 while providing "3x generational performance improvement per watt" compared to the R-Series Merlin Falcon. The Linux-friendly chips are hardware and software compatible with the V1000. The R1000 is designed for fanless embedded systems in applications including digital displays, high-performance edge computing, networking and thin clients. Early adopters include Atari, which is using it for its VCS console, and Ibase, which announced an SBC and signage player. CONTINUE READING Anker Selects Cypress' USB-C Controller for New Charger Family Cypress Semiconductor has announced that its USB-C controller with USB Power Delivery (PD) was selected by Anker for integration into Anker's new family of USB-C chargers. With the integration of Cypress' EZ-PD CCG3PA with USB PD, Anker's new family of PowerPort PD chargers deliver up to 2.5x faster charging times than standard USB-C power adapters, according to Cypress. The EZ-PD CCG3PA controller is compact with a highly-integrated architecture, which helped enable Anker to reduce its own charger dimensions. USB-C is gaining rapid support with top-tier electronics manufacturers by enabling slim industrial designs, easy-to-use connectors and cables, the ability to transmit multiple protocols and provide up to 100 W of power. The USB-C standard's 2.4-mm-high connector plug is also significantly smaller than the current 4.5-mm USB Standard-A connector, enabling easier integration for a wider range of devices.
