5 V MCU Family Provides Water Tolerant
Touch Integration

NXP Semiconductor has announced its 5 V KE1xZ family of MCUs. Based on the Arm Cortex-M0+ core, the MCUs are suited for embedded control systems in harsh electrical environments and provide an integrated CAN controller and capacitive touch from 32 KB flash. Designed for a wide range of industrial applications, the KE1xZ family offers mixed-signal integration across a range of compact memory variants. The 1-MS/s ADC and FlexTimer modules, combined with NXP's Freemaster software tools library and Motor Control Application Tuning plugin (MCAT) enable designs of Brushless DC (BLDC) and other motor-control systems.
NXP's KE1xZ MCU family offers advanced noise immunity, water-tolerant touch and low-power wake-on-touch operation---essential features for the strict electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards of the industrial and home appliance markets. NXP's touch IP, combined with software and tools provide a high level of stability, accuracy and ease of use, with continued responsiveness and functionality through wet conditions. It can sustain 10 V in conducted noise, in alignment with International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 6100-4-6 test level 3.

Capacitive Touch-Key MCUs
Enable 2D/3D Gesture Control

Renesas Electronics has introduced two touch-free user interface (UI) solutions for simplifying the design of 2D and 3D control-based applications. Based on Renesas' capacitive sensor microcontrollers, the new solutions support the development of UIs that allow users to operate home appliances, as well as industrial and OA equipment without touching the devices. The UI solutions make it possible for appliance and equipment manufacturers to quickly develop touch-free interfaces that increase the added-value of their products in terms of both equipment convenience and design.
There are a variety of situations where touch-free operation is advantageous, such as when the users' hands are wet, when the controls are out of reach, or when it is not safe for the user to touch the controls. Renesas new touch-free UI, for example in the kitchen, users could adjust water temperature and flow rate through hand gestures near the faucets or adjust stove fan operation by holding a hand over the hood. The touch-free UI solutions allow customers to easily implement these interfaces in their embedded equipment. Reference designs are available for download.

Enclustra FPGA Modules
Power Electric Racing Car

Formula Student is the largest engineering competition in the world. The Zurich/Switzerland based AMZ student team managed to put itself top of the world rankings, also thanks to the innovative, FPGA module-based approach for the electric drivetrain. Four self-developed inverters control one motor each. A self-developed direct torque control (DTC) modulator is running on a Xilinx Zynq 7015 FPGA-System-on-Chip based Mercury ZX5 SoC module from FPGA expert Enclustra.

Framework Unifies Development for PIC and SAM MCUs

Microchip Technology has announced a unified software framework with the release of MPLAB Harmony version 3.0 (v3), extending support for SAM MCUs for the first time. The development environment is progressively adding support across Microchip's entire portfolio of 32-bit PIC and SAM MCUs. This provides developers more options to meet different end application requirements. The new version also adds enhancements to streamline designs, such as royalty-free security software through a partnership with wolfSSL, as well as modular software downloads that allow designers to only download select portions of software based on the needs of an application.

MPLAB Harmony v3 provides a unified platform with flexible choices spanning architectures, performance and application focus, enabling developers to learn and maintain a single environment on their computer. To support varying software development models from basic device configuration to Real Time Operating System (RTOS)-based applications, MPLAB Harmony version 3.0 relieves designers from having to download the entire software suite when they only need to use small elements or components of it.

ST and Virscient Team Up for Connected-Car Effort

STMicroelectronics has teamed up with Virscient to help system designers build automotive solutions using ST's Telemaco3P secure telematics and connectivity processors. Virscient offers support to ST customers in the development and delivery of advanced automotive applications based on the ST Modular Telematics Platform (MTP). MTP is a comprehensive development and demonstration platform incorporating ST's Telemaco3P telematics and connectivity microprocessor.

MTP enables the rapid prototyping and development of smart-driving applications, including vehicle connectivity to back-end servers, road infrastructure and other vehicles. Virscient brings a deep understanding of wireless connectivity technologies and protocols ideal for architecting connected-car systems that rely on technologies such as GNSS (Precise Positioning), LTE/cellular modems, V2X technologies, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).

RISC-V Processor Family Spans from Low-End to 64-Bit with FPU

As part of its Cortus IC Design Service offering, Cortus has announced the general availability of a complete range of RISC-V processors. These are now available for design-in in customer ASIC designs implemented by the experienced teams at Cortus. A wide range of application needs are covered by the 6 processor cores.

The range starts with a low gate count, very low power 32 bit CPU core-the APS1V (RV32EMC). A more powerful, but equally low power CPU, the APS3V (RV32IMC) comes next. If a multi-core solution is necessary the APS5V (RV32IMAC) is available. If floating point is needed then the single precision FPS6V (RV32IMACF) can be used or the FPS8V (RV32GC) for double precision calculations. The last member of the family is a high performance 64-bit processor with double precision floating point and MMU: the FPS69V (RV64GC).
