Cloud-Based OTA Manager for IoT is Free For Up to Three Devices
Startup UpSwift announced its cloud-based UpSwift IoT management and update service for Linux-based IoT and embedded devices in Jan. 2018 and over the last year has deployed it in "multiple companies." The company is now announcing a new "Prototyping" offering that provides a free lifetime subscription for "maker/developers" who want to manage up to three Linux devices.
UpSwift is a lightweight, application layer micro-update OTA solution with automatic rollbacks, filesystem component updates, and an encryption-based in-transit update security feature. The system is optimized for constrained devices and communications pipelines by reducing data transfers and memory usage.

Study Compares BehrTech's Wireless Platform Against LoRa
Behrtech has issued a report evaluating and comparing the quality-of-service (QoS) of its MYTHINGS platform versus LoRa LPWAN under real-world interference conditions. Professor Dr. Thomas Lauterbach from the Nuremberg Institute of Technology conducted the independent study commissioned by Behrtech. Results showed that in a real-world Industrial IoT environment with high levels of interference from other systems and devices, MYTHINGS has considerably higher interference resilience than LoRa. At the same network range, LoRa loses a significant percentage of messages while MYTHINGS reliably transmits all messages.
Professor Lauterbach said that, in the dense interference scenario, there was a significant difference in the quality-of-service between MYTHINGS and LoRa. Observing both networks at the same signal power, MYTHINGS successfully delivered all messages while the LoRa network lost more than 10% of its messages. Even when signal power was increased, there was a 4% to 5% packet error rate in the LoRa system.

The Telit LE910C1-NF provides 10 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload LTE Category 1 speeds, ideal for trackers, telematics, navigation solutions, digital signage, ATMs, kiosks and video capture devices to name a few. Cattle Heath Monitoring System Taps Semtech's LoRa Technology
Semtech has announced that ITK, a French supplier of IoT-based smart agriculture applications, has developed a new cattle health monitoring solution based on Semtech's LoRa devices. The FarmLife smart agriculture service and its LoRa-enabled sensors detect cattle estrus, drive improved nutrition and predict the onset of disease to help ranchers better monitor their herd.
According to ITK, LoRa devices' flexibility in deployment makes a key difference for connecting animals and offers the potential for a significant return on investment (ROI). ITK's solution provides ranchers with tangible, actionable data on the health of their herd to remove variables from ranching and create productive, efficient and profitable ranches. ITK's LoRa-based sensors deploy simply through a collar equipped to each animal. The collar is non-invasive and immediately begins reporting data on the cow's health upon deployment. CONTINUE READING

LTE, LTE-M, NB-IoT Antenna Serves Embedded Surface-Mount Needs
Linx Technologies, has introduced its Splatch SP610 surface-mount embedded antenna for LTE cellular applications, including LTE-M (Cat-M1) and NB-IoT cellular Internet of Things (IoT) uses. Measuring a compact 10 mm by 40 mm and just 2.8 mm high, the surface-mount SP610 antenna achieves high performance in the more challenging 700 MHz bands as well as common higher-frequency bands. Like all of Linx's Splatch antennas, the SP610 is designed to accommodate close proximity effects from interferers such as other solution components or the human body. This combination of small size and robust performance makes it especially well-suited for cellular IoT applications.
The SP610 targets North American cellular carriers for all LTE applications with excellent performance in the 700 MHz frequency bands favored by Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, while providing strong performance in 800 MHz, 900 MHz and > 1 GHz bands used by carriers, worldwide. Additionally, the SP610 provides full band support for LTE-M and NB-IoT applications which use sub-1 GHz frequencies to achieve longer range, and often use frequency band edges to avoid other cellular traffic.
