Ultra96-V2 SBC adds Certified Wi-Fi and Industrial Temp Support
Avnet has unveiled an upgrade to its open-spec, 96Boards CE form-factor Ultra96 SBC. The Ultra96-V2 retains the $249 price and core features of the Ultra96, including the Arm/FPGA hybrid Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC, but it also makes a few key additions. The biggest touted improvement is a new Microchip wireless module with the same 802.11n Wi-Fi capability, but with Bluetooth improving to 5.0 BLE. The major advantage here is that the module is said to be pre-certified in 75 countries.
Avnet has also "updated all components on the Ultra96-V2 to allow industrial temperature grade options so that the board can operate in harsh industrial applications." We saw no details, however, on the specifics of the standard and industrial options. The term "industrial temperature" usually refers to -40 to 85°C. Rugged COMe Board Sports Ryzen Embedded V1000/R1000 SoC
MEN Micro has announced the CB71C, a rugged COM Express module for rail, public transportation and industry applications. The module is 100% compatible with the COM Express Type 6 pin-out and conforms to the VITA 59 standard, which specifies robust mechanics to ensure reliable operation under the harsh environmental conditions. The CB71C COM Express module can be equipped with the new Ryzen Embedded R1000 SoC in addition to the Ryzen Embedded V1000 SoC. The new AMD Ryzen Embedded R1000 SoC features a Radeon Vega graphics engine with three compute units and support for up to three displays with a resolution of up to 4k without additional graphics hardware. With up to four "Zen" processor cores, when using the AMD Ryzen Embedded V1000 SoC, the CB71C is also suitable for virtualization. CONTINUE READING
Enclustra FPGA Modules Power Electric Racing Car
Formula Student is the largest engineering competition in the world. The Zurich/Switzerland based AMZ student team managed to put itself top of the world rankings, also thanks to the innovative, FPGA module-based approach for the electric drivetrain. Four self-developed inverters control one motor each. A self-developed direct torque control (DTC) modulator is running on a Xilinx Zynq 7015 FPGA-System-on-Chip based Mercury ZX5 SoC module from FPGA expert Enclustra. |

Linaro Launches Two 96Boards SOM Specifications
Linaro, the Arm-backed open source collaborative engineering organization, has announced the publication of version 1.0 of 96Boards System-on-Module (SOM) specifications. 96Boards is Linaro's initiative to build a single software and hardware community across low-cost development boards based on Arm technology. Along with the new specifications, the company has rolled out two board designs: the TB-96AI (shown) based on a Rockchip RK3399Pro processor, and the TB-96AIoT based on the newer Rockchip RK1808 processor.
We've [Linuxgizmos.com] covered a couple RK3399Pro-based boards just within that last four months, including Geniatech's DB3399 Pro, Vamrs' Toybrick RK3399Pro SBC and crowdfunded Khadas Edge-1S SBC from Shenzhen Wesion's Khadas project. The newer Rockchip RK1808, announced in January at CES, is basically a "lite", lower power version of the RK3399Pro with the same Network Processing Unti (NPU). CONTINUE READING

Advantech has announced the release of its newest UTX form factor motherboard: the AIMB-U117. Measuring 116.8 mm x 111.8 mm, this palm-sized industrial motherboard is equipped with Intel Atom E39XX processors and features 3 independent displays, onboard eMMC storage and rich I/O capabilities. It supports a wide range of DC power inputs from 12 V to 24 V. The AIMB-U117 supports extended operating temperatures from -20 to 70°C. Small in size, the AIMB-U117 targets multiple applications: digital signage, passenger information systems, automation, robot AGV, robotics and vending. The AIMB-U117 integrates an Intel Gen 9 graphics engine for improved throughput, media acceleration, and 4K2K display resolution. It offers substantial display interfaces, including DisplayPort1.2, HDMI1.4, and eDP (or LVDS). It supports three simultaneous, independent display outputs to deliver advanced graphics and media performance (DirectX 12.0, OpenGL 4.4, OpenCL 2.0). The 4096 x 2160 high resolution output meets the requirements of high-quality display applications This makes it well suited for digital signage applications requiring a slim-sized solution with high resolution graphics and up to 3 independent display outputs. Preventing IoT Edge Device Vulnerabilities Mentor's Jim Miller explores internal design vulnerabilities and 3rd-party attacks on IoT edge devices in this white paper that answers these questions: - Should hardware designers be concerned about security for IoT edge devices?
- Is it worth the effort and cost to ensure security at this level?
