| Multiphase PMICs Boast High Efficiency and Small Footprint Renesas Electronics has announced three programmable power management ICs (PMICs) that offer high power efficiency and small footprint for application processors in smartphones and tablets: the ISL91302B, ISL91301A, and ISL91301B PMICs. The PMICs also deliver power to artificial intelligence (AI) processors, FPGAs and industrial microprocessors (MPUs).They are also well-suited for powering the supply rails in solid-state drives (SSDs), optical transceivers and a wide range of consumer, industrial and networking devices. The ISL91302B dual/single output, multiphase PMIC provides up to 20 A of output current and 94 percent peak efficiency in a 70 mm² solution size that is more than 40% smaller than competitive PMICs. In addition to the ISL91302B, Renesas' ISL91301A triple output PMIC and ISL91301B quad output PMIC both deliver up to 16 A of output power with 94% peak efficiency. The new programmable PMICs leverage Renesas' R5 Modulation Technology to provide fast single-cycle transient response, digitally tuned compensation, and ultra-high 6 MHz (max) switching frequency during load transients. These features make it easier for power supply designers to design boards with 2 mm x 2 mm, 1-mm low profile inductors, small capacitors and only a few passive components. Renesas PMICs also do not require external compensation components or external dividers to set operating conditions. Each PMIC dynamically changes the number of active phases for optimum efficiency at all output currents. Their low quiescent current, superior light load efficiency, regulation accuracy and fast dynamic response significantly extend battery life for today's feature-rich, power hungry devices. Outputting 1 W of continuous power, the open frame PBO-1 and PBO-1-B series are housed in vertical and right-angle SIP packages, respectively. The vertical PBO-1 series measures as small as 35 mm x 11 mm x 18 mm (1.38" x 0.43" x 0.71"), while the low profile, right-angle PBO-1-B series measures as small as 35 mm x 18 mm x 11 mm (1.38" x 0.71" x 0.43"), making them well-suited for industrial systems, automation equipment, security, telecommunications and smart home devices where limited board real-estate is a factor. These high density power supplies feature wide input voltage ranges from 85 VAC to 305 VAC or 70 VDC to 430 VDC for high voltage DC-DC applications. The PBO-1 and PBO-1-B come available with single output voltages of 5 V, 9 V, 12 V, 15 V and 24 V DC and offer 3,000 VAC input to output isolation. Both series also offer a wide operating temperature range from -40°C to +85°C at full load as well as over current and continuous short circuit protections with auto recovery. Tiny Boost Regulator Eyes Optical Systems Analog Devices has announced the Power by Linear LTM4661, a low power step-up µModule regulator in a 6.25 mm x 6.25 mm x 2.42 mm BGA package. Only a few capacitors and one resistor are required to complete the design, and the solution occupies less than 1 cm² single-sided or 0.5 cm² on double- sided PCBs. The LTM4661 incorporates a switching DC/DC controller, MOSFETs, inductors and supporting components. The LTM4661 operates from a 1.8 V to 5.5 V input supply and continues to operate down to 0.7 V after start-up. The output voltage can be set by a single resistor ranging from 2.5 V to 15 V. The combination of the small, thin package and wide input and output voltage range is ideal for wide range of applications including optical modules, battery-powered equipment, battery-based backup systems, bias voltage for power amps or laser diodes and small DC motors. The LTM4661 can deliver 4 A continuously under 3.3 VIN to 5 VOUT and 0.7 A continuously under 3.3 VIN to 12 VOUT. The LTM4661 employs synchronous rectification, which delivers as high as 92% conversion efficiency (3.3 VIN to 5 VOUT). The switching frequency is 1 MHz, and can also be synchronized to an external clock ranging from 500 kHz to 1.5 MHz. The LTM4661 1 MHz switching frequency and dual phase single output architecture enable fast transient response to line and load changes and a significant reduction of output ripple voltage. The LTM4661 has three operation modes: burst mode operation, forced continuous mode and external sync mode. The quiescent current in burst mode operation is only 25 µA, which provides extended battery run time. For applications demanding the lowest possible noise operation, the forced continuous mode or external sync mode minimize possible interference of switching noise. CONTINUE READING Module Combines Isolated Data Communications and Power in One Device Murata Power Solutions has announced the introduction of the NMUSB2022PMC, a surface mount powered data isolator module that provides dual port USB data and power isolation from a single upstream port. When used in conjunction with a USB host, a single NMUSB202PMC module counts as two USB hubs for cascaded applications and provides full 5 V/500 mA power to each downstream port. 250 VRMS reinforced isolation provides safety, immunity to EMI and breaking of ground loops. The is NMUSB2022PMC is fully compliant with USB 2.0 specification, which enables hassle-free, "plug and play" operation with any USB-compatible device. It can do automatic switching between full-speed (12 Mbps) and low speed (1.5 Mbps) operation. Operating temperature ranges from -40°C to +85°C. The device enables USB isolation function with a single SMT component. Users may power any USB compatible device from the NMUSB module. The data isolation function included with the DC-DC module adds value and convenience to the user and also eases system approval for medical systems safety certifications.
