Listen to Christmas concerts from around the world and spend the day with your favourite presenters
| | | | It can seem like little has happened in a year, until you stop and look back! That's how I feel at the moment, thinking about 2022. It's almost like vertigo!
I hope that you've had a good year. Maybe 2022 was the year you saw live music again, the year you sang in your choir or played in your orchestra again. Maybe it was the year you traveled again. Maybe you were reunited with loved ones. Here on ABC Classic, we're so pleased that you've spent this year with us.
It's been a joy to bring live music to your radio again in massive quantities that showcase the wealth of sounds being made across this continent. We welcomed the Australian Chamber Orchestra to its brand new home. We brought you the first performance from the newly-refurbished concert hall of the Sydney Opera House, broadcast simultaneously on ABC TV. Chineke! Chamber Ensemble at Adelaide Festival, Deborah Cheetham's Eumeralla - A War Requiem for Peace from the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. I could spend hours listing the unique, life-affirming performances we bring you all the time on ABC Classic.
We said goodbye to a favourite colleague when Margaret Throsby announced her decision to step back from radio. Margaret chose the Australian World Orchestra's performance in August, conducted by Zubin Mehta, as her last broadcast. And then, just a couple of weeks later, there was another farewell. ABC Classic marked the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with a series of special, commemorative programs.
In June, ABC Classic brought exciting soundtracks to your radio with the Classic 100: Music for the Screen. Thank you so much for voting, and taking part throughout the weekend. I feel like you had as much fun as we did!
And just the other day, the culmination of another momentous project starring... well, you. Classic Choir. We did it for the first time in 2020, a way of feeling connected and part of something, at the close of a year that separated us. And this year, it was a better that ever. We collaborated with ABC's Gardening Australia, and host Clarence Slockee, to create a new Christmas carol that celebrates Australian wildlife and flora. Best of all, we all sang in First Nations Languages.
Thank you for being part of this family in 2022, stay safe and have a wonderful, peaceful end to the year.
