Given the outpouring of anger - even from their own supporters and MPs - it may well be a wise move. Looking back, the most surprising thing is that it got to this, given the experience we saw in Scotland a week or so earlier. Most of us will understand the desire to keep standards similar so that universities, colleges and employers are able to compare like with like when it comes to competition for places and jobs. And under normal circumstances, the vast majority of us would agree. But these are not normal circumstances, are they? These young people on the cusp of adulthood have to cope with a pandemic which meant they were unable to sit their exams. Given that, one would have expected a bit of flexibility - and if that meant allowing teachers' recommendations to stand for one year, surely that would have made sense. Using what one Lancashire headteacher has described as a 'faceless algorithm' to decide the future of so many young people seems like madness.
