Dear Friend, Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina! Choosing Life and Opportunity This week I continued pushing back against the narrative from the Left that suggests abortions are the best option for low-income and African American women, and somehow improve our economy — a position promoted by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen at last week’s banking hearing. As a Black man who grew up in a poor, single-parent household, I know that hard work and opportunity — not abortion — are the keys to achieving the American Dream. In an interview with Harris Faulkner, I shared my family’s story and explained why I believe access to opportunity is what will move America forward. Click below to watch the interview, and click here for my new Washington Post op-ed on how I believe we can truly help single moms and low-income families thrive. Click to watch Seeking Answers for the Baby Formula Crisis Families across the Palmetto State are seeing the effects of the infant formula shortage, and they deserve a full and transparent account of what went wrong. That’s why I joined 21 of my colleagues on a letter to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), demanding answers for the Biden administration’s failure to prevent this crisis. In the letter, we ask for more information concerning when the administration was made aware of the problem and what steps they will take to fix it. Click here to read more. Supporting Struggling Seniors Many of our nation’s seniors struggle silently with mental health issues. This week, I held a Senate Aging Committee hearing, along with Chairman Bob Casey (D-Pa.), on how we can better support those seniors and improve mental health care. Click below for my opening remarks. Click to watch Dr. Ken Rogers, state director of the South Carolina Department of Mental Health, testified on how our state is working to better care for struggling seniors. Click here to watch his testimony, as well as his answer to my question about the role law enforcement plays in mental health crises. Sincerely, |
