Hsiao-Ching Chou, author of Chinese Soul Food, loves this dish, because it feels warm and comforting, but also fresh. That’s not the only reason she’s making rice cakes for Lunar New Year, though. Their Mandarin name, nian gao (or sticky cake), is a homophone for nian, which means “year”, and gao, which means “tall” or “high.” She says, “When you stick all those years together, or pile on the years, you’re wishing people longevity and lots of good luck.”
