The Advocate's Top Headlines

with Matthew Albright | Assistant metro editor

Good morning! Here are some top stories from yesterday:

Rethinking Confederate street names

A Baton Rouge committee is studying the idea of renaming streets honoring Confederate generals should be renamed. It recently received a report from LSU professors and students who looked into the history of those streets. Many committee members felt the research proved the names came from racist attitudes and should be taken down.

This story looks at what the research found, and this list shows the 16 streets the committee is currently focused on.

Bad news for LSU football

Max Johnson, LSU's starting QB, said last night that he was leaving and entering the transfer portal. That means LSU either has to play Garrett Nussmeier, who would lose his redshirt year of elegibility, or play a walk-on QB.

Meanwhile, new coach Brian Kelly has made a flurry of hires to his coaching staff. Here's a rundown.

Prominent attorney suspended

Ron Haley, a prominent Baton Rouge defense and civil rights attorney, will be suspended from practicing law for six months. This story walks through what led to the punishment, and explains some of the high-profile local cases in which Haley is involved.

Thanks for reading, and have a great day!
