BY DOUG GRAHAM | Staff writer Baton Rouge schools reopened on Tuesday, but operations remain far from normal in the school system. Superintendent Sito Narcisse plans to ask the parish School Board to rework the school schedule for the rest of the school year in order to deal with a severe shortage of drivers this year as well as a bus fleet diminished by vehicles in need of repair. The School Board has scheduled a special meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday where it plans to consider new start and stop times for schools. The process of bread making and baking is a careful blend of art and science, and Moeko Glynn does it very well. After starting out by offering her products to neighbors and friends, the self-taught baker from Japan started Maru Bread Co. in 2017, selling at local coffee shops and then at Mid City Makers Market. Glynn now hosts a pop-up bakery in her home almost every Saturday from 10 a.m. until everything is sold out. The National Weather Service warns of a "potential for all-time records to be eclipsed" around the state in the days ahead, beginning Wednesday, and to top it off, the agency suggests the risk of extreme heat won't ease anytime soon. Gov. John Bel Edwards has declared a state of emergency due to the extreme heat, and the number of heat-related deaths in Louisiana for June, July and August has risen to 25, according to the Department of Health. |
