Champions of the Flyway - A birdrace for conservation |
Spring is approaching and we are eagerly awaiting bird migration. One of the most special places during migration is Eilat in Israel. Eilat is located along the route of over hundreds of million birds and is the venue for the Champions of the Flyway Birdrace (COTF). COTF is a well known fund- and awareness-raising event in global birding and conservation circles. Since the beginning in 2014 the conservation community has managed to raise around $500,000 for projects tackling the illegal killing of birds migrating along the flyways. The latest campaign – culminating in the famous 24-hour Bird Race on March 27th – is in collaboration with the Association for the Conservation of Biovidersity of Kazakhstan (ACBK) and the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB), BirdLife International’s partners along these critical flyway, stopover and wintering sites for one of the world’s most threatened goose species, the Red-Breasted Geese. |

ZEISS is not just the main sponsor of the event, we are also attending with two teams! Get to know them! |
The ZEISS Harpies are eager to get out into the field and enjoy the fantastic birding and friendly competition that COTF offers, while raising money for important on-the-ground conservation in the process. This pan-European team cements the idea that birding has no borders – an important concept for migratory birds, such as the Red-breasted Geese. |

The team will be travelling light – with the new featherlight ZEISS SFL binoculars around their necks, the ZEISS Harpies are ready to bird with their heads held high from early morning to late into the night! |

The ZEISS Arctic Redpolls |
They are a team of four enthusiast birdwatchers and ornithologists from Finland, with bird races close to their heart. For them, COTF is primarily about protection of migratory birds and raising funds. For all of them it is essential to understand and promote knowledge on the different hazards the migratory birds face, not only along their journey but also in their breeding grounds now and in the future. |

Fundraising Campaign Help us to support the Red-breasted Geese |
Our ZEISS Harpies, would like to encourage you to consider donating to support the prevention of illegal hunting of Red-breasted Geese along their migration route and on their wintering grounds. Every donation made will directly go to the birdlife partners in Kazakhstan and Bulgaria, where field work and monitoring actions take place. We will raffle 10 limited-edition t-shirts from the Champions of the Flyway 2023 race. All you need to do is to make a donation and leave your contact details. No matter how big or small the amount you donate, your name will automatically be entered into the raffle. |
