CHAC Norte Featured Artist.. Thundering across the plains, the sound of bison can be heard from miles as they run in the thousands… two hundred years ago there were millions of them. They walked incessantly searching for new valleys of tender grass… Their indomitable spirit imposing as the sound of their hooves claim power and reign… An estimated 20 to 30 million bison once dominated the North American landscape from the Appalachians to the Rockies, from the Gulf Coast to Alaska. To the Native Americans, sharing the lands with Tatanka was a sacred and respected habitat, but human greed, power, and dominance over land put an end to that, reducing the population to just 1,091 by 1889. Today, approximately 500,000 bison live across North America. Unregulated shooting and loss of habitat have also been a hindrance to the bison in recent years. Historically, the bison played an essential role in shaping the ecology of the Great Plains. They graze heavily on native grasses and disturb the soil with their hooves, allowing many plant and animal species to flourish. Though bison once roamed across much of North America, today they are “ecologically extinct” as a wild species throughout most of their historic range, except for a few national parks and other small wildlife areas. This exhibit is an artistic eulogy to the bison, the spirit of the north american land. Ta·tan·ka--tatənka is a Lakota word that literally means “Bull Buffalo.” Tatanka will begin its roaming in the fall/winter of 2016-2017 and will feature 30 different paintings on bison, the life and the importance of Bison in North America. |

CHAC South Presents.. "Regresarás - to return"
Holding it all together, 50" x 52" mixed media, Tony Diego Friday January 6th through January 28th, Parental child abduction is one of the most significant and least understood human rights issues and although it is becoming more widespread, it has affected children and families as long as people have been negotiating the intersections of community, culture, nation and state. Parental child abduction jeopardizes a child’s connection to their left behind family and may result in the fragmentation of culture as well as the loss of language, social connection and community. It violates numerous rights of the child and can cause severe psychological and emotional trauma for both the abducted child and the parent left behind. The purpose of this art exhibit is to raise public awareness of this issue and to simultaneously stimulate dialogue and healing for affected families. The artist featured in this exhibit are; Tony Diego, Izzy and Paloma Lozano, Josiah Lopez, Christine O’Dea, Alicia Cardenas, Azul and Sheila Olsen. |

CHAC Norte Artists for January: Michael Penny- Myths, symbols, and legends permeate all languages, cultures and lives. The influence mythology has in our most basic traditions can be observed in the language, customs, rituals, values and morals of every culture. One way of understanding a culture is to study the underlying mythological beliefs, the symbols used to represent myths, and understanding the legends of a culture. Such an exploration leads to a greater understanding of the essence of a culture. I try to express the myths, symbols, and legends of ancient cultures through my art.
RICARDO NASCIMENTO Artist, designer, muralist. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro Brazil. Studied Art and Architecture in Brazil and the US. Has produced work in Brazil, Mexico, France and the United States. “ I seek to find the intersection of the material world and the spiritual world, where Art resides. The materials used to produce a painting, a house, a sculpture or anything else must stand just at the right spot where the flow of life can run through it. It is that simple. Once there, all materiality become a window that opens up our senses to all things untouchable, unseen and common to us all.” No matter if the work is abstract or representational, as in “The Americans” series, it should help us see things around us in a different light. It should help us be heard and leave a seed of hope inside the heart of the viewer. Yeah, it’ll leave a mark! Stevon Lucero paints his profound visions with power and beauty. Coming in February We are proud to host this informative exhibit that has traveled nation wide. SORR Mission Statement The Sing Our Rivers Red (SORR) events aim to bring awareness to the epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women and colonial gender based violence in the United States and Canada. The events strive to raise consciousness, unite ideas and demand action for Indigenous women, girls, Two Spirit and LGBTQQIA people who have been murdered or gone missing, tortured, raped, trafficked, and assaulted, who have not had the proper attention or justice. SORR also is being planned in solidarity and with collaborative spirit, meant to support the efforts built in Canada, as well as highlight the need for awareness and action to address colonial gender violence in the United States. Sing Our Rivers Red events recognize that each of us has a voice to not only speak out about the injustices against our sisters, but also use the strength of those voices to sing for our healing. Water is the source of life and so are women. We need to Sing Our Rivers Red to remember the missing and murdered and those who are metaphorically drowning in injustices. We are connecting our support through the land and waters across the border. For More information Please Contact CHAC 303.571.0440 |
