6 Visionary Women Chefs Share How Theyâre Shaping the Future of Food | San Francisco is known for being on the forefront of food trends, and women chefs are often leading the way, opening innovative restaurants, championing sustainability and equity, and supporting local farmers. Historically, it has not been easy for women to thrive in the food industry, and they still face systemic barriers. In the United States, women make up half the entry-level workforce in the food industry while also being underrepresented in leadership, including women of color. ï»ż Despite the barriers, women chefs are gaining increasing representation and recognition, paving the way for the next generation. In celebration of Womenâs History Month, we asked six women chefs from some of the Bay Areaâs top restaurants about changes they aim to create through their work in foodâas well as what Ferry Plaza Farmers Market produce theyâre highlighting on their menus as we head into spring.
Our Markets Are Open. Stay Healthy and Safe.
With increasing concerns about the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the Bay Area, our top priority is the health and safety of our community. Our open-air farmers markets are open, and we encourage everyone to attend and support your local farmers. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables is one of the best ways to keep your immune system strong. Common sense safety measures are always a good idea. Please wash your hands frequently, and avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Bathrooms are located on both ends of the inside of the Ferry Building and second floor. We will have hand sanitizer at the Info Booth and will be wiping down our market seating regularly. Here are more tips for how to prepare. Please be kind and remember that viruses do not target by race or ethnicity. We are always stronger together in love and respect, not fear. We will continue to monitor the situation and keep you posted. Thank you for your partnership in ensuring our farmers markets are safe, healthy, and inclusive spaces for everyone!
