Thirty-two years ago today, on May 22, 1993, California farmers, Bay Area chefs, and neighbors came together to start the first weekly Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, creating a shared public space for San Franciscans to gather, learn, and build community through fresh, local food. The seeds of that vision continue to grow and thrive to this day—a testament to dedicated community members like you!

Many of you have been shopping at the farmers market for years, and have also demonstrated your commitment to local farmers and food education by supporting Foodwise in deeper ways, like Foodwise Sustainers Joanne Chan and Nai Yuan Hsu.

“I learned about the other great programs that Foodwise is doing like Foodwise Kids,” says Joanne. “I volunteered with them once, and it really showed me the beauty of what the program means to the kids that are in it and also the families that are involved. Being able to offer even just that small level of stability to Foodwise and to the kids that they’re supporting and educating, it’s a small contribution that we could do, so we're really happy to be Sustainers.” Watch this video to hear directly from Joanne and Nai about why they give.
