Will LSU injury bug help Ed Orgeron keep his job? Probably not.
Just after announcing the sad news that All-American cornerback Eli Ricks was the latest LSU player to be out for the season, coach Ed Orgeron answered a reporter's greeting on Wednesday's SEC coaches' teleconference by saying: "It's a beautiful day here." If nothing else, one has to admire Coach O's attempt to be positive. The dark clouds are gathering over Orgeron's football program, with Ricks' shoulder injury (which will require surgery) the latest serious blow. Wilson Alexander talked to Ricks' mother Shauna about the situation and had reaction from Ricks himself. If there is one small silver lining, it's that Ricks' mother wanted to address rumors Ricks might be transferring as false. At Wednesday's practice the focus was on the backups now being pressed into action or players in new roles, like nickel back Cordale Flott at cornerback. Meanwhile, in my column I ask the question as to whether LSU's stunning rash of injuries will give Orgeron a chance to survive this season (hint: I think you know the answer). Though LSU lost 42-21 last Saturday at Kentucky, the Tigers' running game finally showed some improvement. Check out this story to see how LSU's new blocking concepts helped the Tigers have their best rushing game of the season and gave some hopes to a previously woeful aspect of the LSU offense. We also take a look at LSU's latest bowl projections. Yes, most of them still have the Tigers bowling, including a projection for a bowl you probably never heard of before. With all the doom and gloom coming from football, LSU fans are probably ready to turn the page toward basketball. Here's a pair of stories for you: Tickets are now on sale for LSU's Oct. 23 exhibition game in Thibodaux against Nicholls State, with funds to benefit Hurricane Ida relief. And women's basketball has set Oct. 26 as the date for its kickoff event for the Fast Break Club, the program's booster club. Until next time, Scott Rabalais |
