First it was Tom Brady winning the Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, then Phil Mickleson won the US Open and now Helio Castroneves – at the age of 46 – wins the Indianapolis 500 for a record-equaling fourth time.
While there’s a major youth movement in IndyCar right now, this was another victory for the old guard. Castroneves fell out of fulltime IndyCar competition after the 2017 season, switching to sportscars, but he always felt he had another Indy 500 victory in him.
Fair play then to Mike Shank and Jim Meyer for fielding the extra car which Helio drove to Victory Lane for an unforgettable success that was enjoyed by 135,000 fans. The crowd number might have been limited, but the atmosphere and scenes of joy as Helio climbed the fence certainly weren’t. |
