Your ability to influence others could be due to your strong belief in your own convictions. It could seem that people are more willing to listen to your ideas because of the compelling nature of your opinions and commitment to them. While it is important to hold steadily to your beliefs, this could be a good time to work on using your ability to listen to others. Should you need to convince someone of your position today, you can make an extra effort to pay attention to what they are saying. You may even want to use active listening--repeating what that person has said back to them--to ensure that you have understood everything correctly. You may notice that being a good listener in addition to having strong beliefs has greater power to influence others. Using active-listening techniques allows us to make certain that we have thoroughly received a message. It is easy to listen to something and be distracted or color what we hear through our own perceptions. By making an effort to show we have understood something, however, there is less room for miscommunication. This is particularly effective when we want others to understand and support our own ideas. They will be more willing to hear us if we extend the same consideration to them.
