"Churches don't often worry about the potential costs of risks," Richard Hammar wrote. "After all, mishaps and emergencies are covered by wide-range property and liability insurance, right? In fact, church leaders may not fully understand the degree to which certain risks remain or the potential costs associated with these risks. They also may not know the limits of the policy, or how much of the risk is actually transferred with insurance." If a significant loss were to occur tomorrow at your church, is your insurance coverage enough to pay for it? If not, has your church developed alternative means to make up the difference? In the ongoing assessment of potential liabilities a church may face, these are significant questions that leaders must wrestle with before a problem arises. Take time now to do just that.
