MILES OF PILES: As New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell's administration struggles to deliver the basic public service of garbage collection, a new survey says 58% of respondents haven't seen a garbage truck at their house in two weeks - some even longer.City Hall, meanwhile, signed an emergency contract with one garbage hauler but has yet to award a second one - and told residents they can drive their own garbage to a dropoff site in the St. Roch area.
A COVID CASUALTY: Damon Thibodeaux, who spent 16 years in prison before being exonerated in 2012 for a Bridge City murder he did not commit, has died of COVID-19.
SANDWICH SHRINE: Two more casualties of Hurricane Ida surfaced Wednesday. The roof over the 115-year-old Central Grocery, perhaps the most famous purveyor of the muffuletta, and its French Quarter neighbor, Sidney’s Wine Cellar, was smashed in the storm, and rain has been leaking into them ever since.

Rain from Tropical Depression Nicholas fell into the streets of New Orleans on Wednesday afternoon. It also fell onto the floor of the 115-year-old Central Grocery in the French Quarter. For 18 days, the wrecked roof above the landmark has allowed precipitation to pour down into the world’s primo source for muffuletta sandwiches, a New Orleans original. Read more
