Something smelled different. On the couch lay my dog Tucker, his head encircled by a plastic veterinary cone large enough to pick up signals from space. He had just come home from the vet, where he had been treated for a split toenail. The sensitive quick was exposed — a very painful condition, particularly in the middle of winter when below-freezing temperatures exacerbated his discomfort.
