![]() Slow and steady wins the race: Kentucky replaces derby with an “exciting” new eventSports fans have been devastated from cancellations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and fans of horseracing are no exception. The Kentucky Derby, the longest-running sporting event in the U.S., has been postponed until at least September. But fear not, the state still has a lesser-known racing event that’s sure to quicken your pulse. Behold the Kentucky Turtle Derby — an event started at the tail-end of World War II when the horse-races were canceled. During the event, 167 turtles are brought in for an eight-minute race to the finish line, with all the bells and whistles of a traditional horse race. You get fancy decorations for the star reptiles, silly names like Sir-Hides-A-Lot and Galapa-GO, and cheering crowds (although this time, they’re virtual). It’s one of the toughest races to call, due to how slow the contestants are moving. But one thing is certain: It’s a shell of a time. Hopefully, none of the contestants get the sniffles during the race. That will only slow them down! Tap or click to see the adorable moment when a turtle sneezes. → |
