| | MEDIA WINNER: Chris Wallace CNN's Chris Wallace had a series of headline-generating moments this weekend on his series, Who's Talking to Chris Wallace? He asked filmmaker Quentin Tarantino about the oft-criticized amount of violent content and use of the n-word in his movies, and then grilled him about his relationship with disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, pressing Tarantino as to why he didn't do more to stop his predatory behavior. Wallace's interview with entertainer and LGBTQ+ activist Billy Porter was especially emotional, covering the star's gripping tale of his childhood sexual abuse and how Porter grappled with his identity, even hoping that "maybe the gay will fade" as he gained fame. The segment with tech journalist Kara Swisher intersected with several other major news stories, including their discussion of Swisher's prominent role in criticizing a controversial NBC report on Pennsylvania Senate candidate John Fetterman, and her thoughts on Elon Musk's recent takeover of Twitter. In Swisher's assessment, the social media platform "absolutely" could collapse with Musk at the helm, and she spelled out multiple specific reasons why. Wallace's program has been bringing in strong ratings, even beating Fox News and MSNBC last weekend in the key 25-to-54-year-old demo. The fate of the show wasn't clear in the wake of the collapse of CNN+ but solid ratings plus newsworthy interviews sounds like a winning combo to us. |

| MEDIA LOSER: Bob Chapek Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Chapek was suddenly ousted and replaced with his predecessor Sunday evening in a surprise move by the corporation's board that highlighted the "turmoil" of Chapek's tenure leading the House of Mouse. The news that Bob Iger would resume his previous gig as CEO sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry. Media reporters pointed to multiple stumbles Chapek had made, including struggling to appease complaints from employees over his response to Florida's Parental Rights in Education bill (dubbed "Don't Say Gay" by its critics). That was followed by a stunning blow to Disney's ability to manage its 25,000 acre property in Central Florida when Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) signed a bill to eliminate the special taxing district, the Reedy Creek Improvement District, next June. The Reedy Creek fiasco was "a colossal, chaotic mess surrounding the company’s largest theme park property, and it happened totally under Chapek’s watch," wrote Mediaite's Sarah Rumpf, a Florida native who has covered the story extensively. Chapek also presided over Disney's struggles during the pandemic, benefitting from a skyrocketing demand for streaming content but also taking a hit with decreased revenues for theme parks and movie theaters. A recent tumble in Disney's stock price may have been the breaking point for the Disney board. It's been a rocky two years for Chapek, and now it's all come to an even rockier end. |
