Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Patch editor Jacqueline Sweet

Rep. George Santos (R-NY) has dominated headlines for weeks as a seemingly unending parade of revelations has emerged about his serial fabrications, but one of the biggest bombshells about the New York Republican came from a local reporter at the regional Patch website.

Jacqueline Sweet's report for the Oyster Bay Patch on how Santos allegedly swindled a disabled veteran out of a GoFundMe account that was intended to pay for life-saving surgery for his service dog was shocking even among the chaotic swarm of Santos stories.

According to Sweet, in 2016, a disabled Navy veteran named Richard Osthoff was living in a chicken coop in New Jersey and his service dog Sapphire needed live-saving surgery that would cost $3,000.

Osthoff told Sweet that Santos had claimed his pet charity could help Sapphire, set up a GoFundMe page for Sapphire’s surgery, but closed the page after the money was raised and never gave him the funds, leaving the despondent Navy vet no choice but to euthanize Sapphire.

Santos has denied the story, but Sweet's report included screenshots of social media posts and text messages between Osthoff and the newly-elected Congressman. It's solid on-the-ground reporting that brought to light one of the most fascinating stories about Santos, and Sweet deserves all the kudos coming her way.

MEDIA LOSER:
Steven Crowder

We don't often repeat a Loser award, but when a dude takes the daily dishonor and then doubles down on his dastardly deeds, we're willing to consider it. And thus we find Steven Crowder back in the "L" column again today.

The Louder With Crowder host launched a messy public spat with Daily Wire founders Ben Shapiro and Jeremy Boreing on Thursday, complaining about an offer they had sent him that he claimed showed how they were "in bed with Big Tech."

Boreing and Shapiro slapped back hard, pointing out the terms of the offer, which many commentators viewed as more than reasonable -- especially the $50 million payout to Crowder for a 4 year term.

Friday saw the feud blow up even more, with Crowder releasing a secret recording he made of a phone call with Boreing.

Boreing hit back at Crowder on Twitter, writing, “I would play the part of that call where we talked about our kids, Christmas, and him buying baby formula for his brother’s children, but I wouldn’t even know how to secretly record phone calls with my friends.”

Shapiro chimed in with a damning timeline of Crowder's interactions with the Daily Wire founders, pointing out his hypocrisy.

Maybe Crowder can build his own successful platform. But if not, he may regret burning this bridge in such a public way.
