Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Chuck Todd

NBC News' Chuck Todd moderated an impressively civil and newsworthy bipartisan joint interview on Sunday.

The Meet the Press host invited both Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH) and Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT.) both prominent members of House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, to discuss key topics including China, Russia, and former President Donald Trump.

Despite the potentially contentious topics, the lawmakers remained informative and collegial -- largely thanks to Todd's news-focused, non-partisan questions.

Todd focused on policy questions when asking about the nation's relationship with China and Russia, prompting the lawmakers to explain the potential benefits or consequences of engaging with Chinese officials to ensure they do not support Russia throughout the war.

While discussing both Trump and President Joe Biden's classified documents, the lawmakers also agreed that neither has been satisfied with the briefings on the matter. They did, however, highlight the severity of the issue for both politicians.

Moderating an informative and civil interview with bipartisan politicians is a tough feat. Props to Todd for pulling off the media rarity.

MEDIA LOSER:
Elon Musk

Twitter users were up in arms about a weird and frustrating technical glitch on the platform Monday. Meanwhile, Elon Musk, who fired the majority of his staff after buying the company last year, responded by complaining that the platform is “so brittle.”

It’s not completely clear what exactly fell apart with Twitter’s behind-the-scenes technological infrastructure, but for several hours, several Twitter functions were nonfunctional at all.

Any time a Twitter user attempted to click on a link, they were sent to a white screen, blank except for some text that listed an error message that “Your current API plan does not include access to this endpoint,” and a link to a page on the Twitter developer site.

As traditionally happens, Twitter users complained on Twitter about the Twitter problems, sending phrases like “Twitter API,” “Twitter HQ,” and “#TwitterDown” trending at various points in the early afternoon.

Instead of reassuring any frustrated Twitter users, Musk responded to one single user’s tweet by complaining about his own company, the very company where he personally made the decision to fire vast swaths of his staff that included employees with years-long experience and knowledge of coding and systems.
