Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Fox Soul hosts Mike Hill and Vivica Fox

After a whirlwind day of confusion, two Fox Soul hosts Mike Hill and Vivica Fox appear to have landed President Joe Biden's Super Bowl Sunday interview.

The interview — a massive get for any news network and a tradition for presidents and the networks hosting the Super Bowl since the George W. Bush administration — was not one that came easy.

Mixed signals from the White House and Fox Corp. on Friday led media reporters on a wild goose chase trying to figure out whether Biden would do the interview, and with what outlet.

Variety was first to report on Thursday night that Fox News would not be getting the interview (given Fox is hosting the Super Bowl, Fox News was expected to get interview with the president).

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre came out Friday to say that Fox Soul, a little-known streaming network for Black audiences owned by Fox Corporation, was supposed to get the interview — until Fox cancelled it.

So Biden wasn't doing a Super Bowl interview after all. Not so fast.

Fox Corp. issued a statement saying that Fox Soul would be going through with the interview.

The back and forth was confounding, but likely the result of the Biden White House seeking to avoid an interview with the traditional Fox venue, Fox News, and opting for its completely unknown sister streamer Fox Soul.

However it got done, Hill and Fox, hosts at a little-known and little-watched streaming outlet, are now the hosts of one of the biggest presidential interviews of the year. That's a huge win for them and for Fox Soul.

MEDIA LOSER:
James O’Keefe

James O’Keefe, the founder and chairman of Project Veritas, is on paid leave from the conservative organization while its board considers whether to remove him from his position altogether.

New York Magazine first reported O'Keefe's leave, sharing that Daniel Strack, the organization’s executive director, sent an internal message to employees saying that O’Keefe would be taking “a few weeks of well-deserved PTO.”

O'Keefe's leave comes after the FBI launched an investigation into Project Veritas' purchasing of a diary stolen from Ashley Biden, the president’s daughter.

O'Keefe is also facing lawsuits from former employees, with one claiming he led a chaotic and sexually tense workplace.

One-third of Project Veritas' employees also signed a shocking memo, obtained by the Daily Beast, which alleges workplace cruelty among other insane incidents.

"I would describe Project Veritas' current environment with this saying: 'The beatings will continue until morale improves," one staffer wrote in the memo, according to the Beast.

The Beast further reported that the memo "covers its founder's demanding and allegedly abusive treatment of his staff, even laying out concerns that Project Veritas will soon collapse entirely as donors and employees flee."

One allegation claims that O'Keefe berated an employee during a Sept. 2022 trial against a Democratic consulting firm (O'Keefe lost) because he needed something to eat. And how did he prove his hunger? By allegedly taking a sandwich from a pregnant woman. Oof. None of this is looking good.
