Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Outkick's Clay Travis

Clay Travis' digital brand Outkick saw massive growth during the fourth quarter of 2022, according to numbers from Comscore.

Outkick, a young site purchased by Fox in 2021, reportedly closed out 2022 with an average of 4.4 million monthly multiplatform unique visitors -- more than doubling its 2021 numbers.

The numbers specifically show a 123 percent growth in the brand's total multiplatform views from 2021 to 2022.

The digital brand also showed impressive progress on social, as its multiple platform engagement numbers grew yearly by 46 percent. The brand's video views alone marked a 94 percent growth.

The online outlet also reportedly logged a 235 percent yearly growth in unique visitors during the fourth quarter, with an average of 9.1 million unique visitors per month.

On top of that impressive growth, Outkick saw its best performance yet in October 2022 with 12.2 million unique visitors.

“The growth of OutKick is truly remarkable,” Travis shared in a press release.

“Our talent continues to diversify its coverage and push the boundaries on the most pressing storylines that’s not only driving the conversation but attracting the largest audience across the platform. I couldn’t be more excited about the future of OutKick and what we have achieved in such a short period of time.”

Travis and the Outkick team deserve a huge round of applause for this truly impressive traffic.

MEDIA LOSER:
MSNBC columnist Ruth Ben-Ghiat

MSNBC columnist and New York University professor Ruth Ben-Ghiat declared Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) “authoritarian” after he recommended that students be prevented from using their phones during class.

DeSantis questioned why children are on their phones during class during a Monday press conference. He later suggested that schools require students “leave their phone in some cubby or something," during class -- before returning the phones at recess.

Ben-Ghiat, who is touted as a "commentator on authoritarianism and propaganda” by MSNBC, said this was further evidence of DeSantis' “authoritarian personality.

"He is so dangerous in every way,” she also wrote in a Monday night tweet, receiving prompt mockery from a number of conservatives.

To DeSantis' point, various reports and studies indicate that children’s screen time has skyrocketed and academic performance has suffered since the start of the pandemic.

According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, both reading and math scores for children in fourth and eighth grade fell precipitously between 2019 and 2022.

Gaps between white and minority — as well as low and high-income — students widened.

Ben-Ghiat has emerged as MSNBC's foremost guide to an alleged rise in fascism in the US. DeSantis expressing disapproval of phones in classrooms is not an example of any sort of extremism, and claiming it hardly bolsters her credentials.
