Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
CNN's Kate Bolduan

CNN’s Kate Bolduan made sure to confront Los Angeles City Councilman Kevin De Leon on the various controversies he faces during an interview on Tuesday.

Bolduan largely focused on the physical altercation De Leon had with an activist at a recent holiday event. The incident occurred as local activists were protesting another controversy of De Leon's: his participation in a meeting where he and his fellow city council members made racially-charged, disparaging comments about their colleague’s adopted son.

Bolduan noted that everyone else involved in the scandal has either resigned or made plans to leave office.

“Why are you not resigning?” Bolduan asked De Leon, point blank. “I know you say you still have work to do. But other members, the points that the councilmembers are making still today about this whole thing is that they say that the city cannot heal if you are still there. And one member saying that you’re continued presence on the council is causing severe and ongoing harm.”

De Leon said he would let voters decide if he should stay in office -- “not folks who are in the peanut gallery or political pundits or even my own colleagues.”

He also stressed that he was sorry about his involvement in the scandal, prompting Bolduan to highlight that he "compared the young Black child of a fellow councilman to being an accessory, like a luxury handbag.”

Bolduan kept going, playing the audio of De Leon’s remarks before asking him to specify what he was apologizing for.

“If this was anyone else,” said Bolduan, “would you say the person I just described is serving their community well?"

MEDIA LOSER:
Washington Post

Media figures are still burying the truth about Rebekah Jones: the faux-whistleblower who alleged without evidence that the state of Florida was purposefully understating the number of residents dying from Covid-19 at the direction of Governor Ron DeSantis.

Jones entered into a deferred prosecution agreement with the state last week. She admitted to illegally accessing and downloading state data, as well as sending a message to 1,750 employees using state systems, paid $20,000 to the state, and ultimately agreed to attend therapy in exchange for the state holding off on prosecution for 24 months.

In spite of Jones’s admission of guilt, her longtime boosters in the media, including the Washington Post’s Marisa Iati, first amplified her false version of events, and are now burying the real story of Rebekah Jones.

Iati actually linked to one of Jones’s GoFundMe accounts (Jones had raised over $500,000 by December 2020 and continues to solicit donations to this day) in a story that credulously described Jones’s unsubstantiated claims as “serious” and offered no further scrutiny of them.

She put a bow on the article with the GoFundMe link and a quote from Jones claiming that all she wanted to do was “help people.”

The Washington Post never affixed a correction to the story.

CNN’s John Avlon, Ron Filipkowski, and MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell, among others, also boosted Jones despite the clear issues regarding -- allowing her to make a small fortune off of her baseless claims and even secure the Democratic nomination to represent Florida’s 1st congressional district in 2022.
