Ari Melber

MSNBC’s Ari Melber pressed Joe Tacopina, a lawyer for Donald Trump, about whether the former president lied about a hush money payment he made before the 2016 election.

At issue is a $130,000 payment Trump’s former attorney, Michael Cohen, made to Stormy Daniels, who alleges she had an affair with Trump. The Manhattan district attorney is currently investigating the payment, which is not necessarily illegal, but the DA has reportedly been looking into whether Trump falsified business records to hide the payment.

Cohen said Trump reimbursed him for the payment, which Trump denies authorizing. Melber cited a report about Cohen’s payment to Daniels while speaking to Tacopina, asking why lie about and misidentify the payment if it was legal.

"If the spending or the fulfillment of a commitment or the expenditure would exist irrespective of a campaign, it’s not a campaign law violation. End of story. This would've existed irrespective of the campaign," Tacopina said, maintaining Trump's innocence.

Melber then played a clip of Trump denying he knew about Cohen’s payment to Daniels. Tacopina insisted Trump was not lying, prompting Melber to predict that he hit a sore topic for Trump's lawyer.

“It seems like we’re drawing some blood here because you’re having a strong reaction," Melber replied. "He did lie about it and in a confidential settlement you can easily say, ‘No comment’ or ‘I’m not getting into it.'”

Bethany Mandel

Conservative columnist Bethany Mandel was unable to define the term "woke" in a pretty awkward and now viral interview on The Hill’s morning program Rising.

Rising cohost Briahna Joy Gray asked Mandel to define the term "wokeness" on Tuesday, as the columnist had repeated the word several times throughout the interview.

“So, I mean, woke is sort of the idea that…” Mandel stammered, after which she paused for roughly 10 seconds, though it felt longer. “This is going to be one of those moments that goes viral,” she added in a prescient moment of self-awareness.

Mandel went on to claim that "woke" was "very hard to define," still unable to answer Gray's question.

She later admitted she "spent an entire chapter" of her book defining the very term she was unable to define at that moment.

“Sorry. It’s hard to explain in a 15 seconds soundbite," she conceded, later adding, "It is sort of the understanding that we need to totally re-imagine and redo society in order to create hierarchies of oppression.”

Perhaps if you are going to write a book based on how "wokeness" is ruining our current society, you should be a bit clearer on what that term means before you do your media rounds.

The clip did end up going viral, with many pundits noting that she was unable to define the word she was a supposed expert on.
