Scarbinsky: No debate here: The Saban dynasty at Alabama is definitely in decline
Nick Saban did everything he could do, but he lost the debate, too. He turned into a tout and still came up short. After failing to coach Alabama into the SEC Championship Game, he couldn’t coax the Crimson Tide into the College Football Playoff. Can’t blame a GOAT for trying, although many people did. There are causes for concern for the Crimson Nation. This is the first five-year period in Saban’s tenure that will conclude with only one national championship. The student he tutored too well is two games shy of two straight. And the brilliant Bryce Young will depart for the NFL with one big ring as a backup and none as a starter. Nothing has dimmed the outlook quite like this season. There were five one-score games for the second straight year. Tennessee defeated him, Brian Kelly got the better of him and the playoff committee disagreed with him -- all for the first time. Odds are, Saban and Alabama will be back with a vengeance. I wouldn’t bet against it, but neither would I bet on it.
