It was a very tough two years for us both

A passionate member of Bowel Cancer Australia's 2022 Dry July team, Lauren chose to raise funds and awareness in memory of her dad.

"I took part in Dry July in honour of my dad Steve, who I lost to Stage 4 bowel cancer at the beginning of June 2022. Dad was diagnosed in May 2020 at the height of the pandemic, and while we thought treatment was extremely successful at first, the cancer had other ideas and it was a very tough two years for us both.

I loved to have a drink with my dad, whether it was over dinner or in celebration of something, and from our travels together he perfected a number of delicious cocktails which he would make for me at home.

Knowing I'll never get to have another drink with my dad makes me incredibly sad, but I hope that by giving up for a month (or maybe longer) and raising vital funds for Bowel Cancer Australia, it'll prevent other families from having to experience what we've been through." ~ Lauren.

Please support Bowel Cancer Australia this Dry July and donate what you can to raise funds for people affected by bowel cancer.

Every bowel cancer patient deserves
to have access to a dedicated
Bowel Care Nurse

Despite being the third most diagnosed cancer, bowel cancer patients don’t receive the same level of support as other common cancers.

Bowel Cancer Australia’s Bowel Care Nurses, Nutritionists, Oncology Social Worker and integrated Bowel Care Nurse programs are addressing this gap, enabling equity of access to personalised care and tailored support nationwide.

Thanks to the fundraising efforts and donations received through Dry July to date, grants from the Dry July Foundation have meant we are able to increase the capacity of our Patient Services team, to meet the growing demand for these vital services.

Bowel Cancer Australia’s 2023 Dry July team will be raising funds to expand the charity's integrated Bowel Care Nurse pilot program.

Supporting the employment of dedicated Bowel Care Nurses in regional communities across the country. Acting as a key point of contact for bowel cancer patients and their families as they navigate the health system in their local area – providing advice, education, support and direct patient care.

Helping to uphold you through your bowel cancer experience

Made possible through the support of Dry July fundraisers and donations, Bowel Cancer Australia welcomed Australia’s first dedicated Bowel Care Oncology Social Worker to our patient services team.

This unique new role helps reduce anxiety and distress, increase feelings of hope and empowerment, through learning new ways of coping, as well as providing practical information about available resources in their community.

“Your psychological and emotional health can have a significant impact on your physical health and ability. Social work therefore looks to holistically address your overall health and wellbeing. Providing another part of the scaffold of support around you, helping to uphold you through your bowel cancer experience.” ~ Victoria, Bowel Care Oncology Social Worker.
