Campsites remain closed during flooding in northern Minnesota
| May 27, 2022 Voyageurs National Park has extended the closure of its backcountry until June 20. Thirty-five campsites have also been closed, and all houseboat sites and day use sites have also been impacted by the flooding. The Park Service says it's likely the closures will be extended beyond June 20. Boat launches remain open, but there's a no-wake zone 300 feet from all shorelines in the park.
While water levels have begun to drop on the eastern side of the basin, Namakan, Kabetogama and Rainy Lakes are expected to continue to rise until mid-June, breaking flooding records set as far back as 1916.
Sandbagging efforts continue to protect homes, cabins and resorts. Minnesota National Guard members are aiding those efforts.
