Don't ignore a team member's tears Follow 3 steps to help them |
Seeing someone in tears can prompt an emotional response. You might feel sympathy, concern, awkwardness, or uncertainty. You don't need to rush up to them immediately and ask what's wrong, but neither can you ignore what's happening. Follow these three steps when someone is crying at work: 1) Decide when to respond: do they need immediate help, or a moment to compose themself. 2) Explore the cause: offering a little 'tea and sympathy' in a private place may encourage them to open up. 3) Moving forward: depending on the cause, be supportive and offer any appropriate assistance. |
This tip is adapted from our article 'When Tears Take Over'. |
