| National Poetry Month National Poetry Month was launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996 to remind the public that poets have an integral role to play in our culture and that poetry matters. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K-12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, and, of course, poets, marking poetry's important place in our lives. Now, as we face an unprecedented circumstance, National Poetry Month has taken on new meaning and importance. More and more people are turning to poetry at this moment, because poetry and inspiring language can help bring solace and needed strength. This April, the Academy of American Poets is more committed than ever to doing everything it can to bring poetry to the widest possible audience. The organization offers activities, initiatives, and resources, which have been adapted so that anyone can join in online and at home and-hopefully-find comfort, resilience, and connection throughout the month of April and beyond. | Stewart O'Nan Stewart O'Nan was raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He earned his B.S. in Aerospace Engineering at Boston University in 1983. While in Boston, O'Nan became a fan of the Red Sox. In 1984, he married his high school sweetheart. They moved to Long Island, New York, and he went to work for Grumman Aerospace Corporation in Bethpage, New York, as a test engineer from 1984 to 1988. Encouraged by his wife to pursue a career in writing, they moved to Ithaca, New York, and O'Nan returned to college and graduated with his M.F.A. from Cornell University in 1992. His family and he then moved to Edmond, Oklahoma, and he taught at the University of Central Oklahoma and the University of New Mexico. From 1995 to 1998, he was a writer-in-residence at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. He currently lives in Pittsburgh PA. Check out his books here. |
