Scott I'm not sure that anyone ever expects to go to their local animal shelter and see the largest rabbit known to man. I certainly didn't. But sure enough, last spring I went for one of my regular volunteer shifts and was greeted by the afternoon supervisor with a hearty recommendation, "You've got to see what's in the 'Exotic' room today!" I was used to seeing an occasional lizard or parakeet, but I was not prepared for the gigantic steel-gray rabbit that filled the cage in front of me. It was a solid two feet long, fat and full and round with long, silky ears. It sat quietly munching away on a little piece of hay while I gawked in disbelief. I think I said, "It's huge!" about fifteen times in a row until Chuck added finally, "Oh, it gets better. Look." Gently, he pushed a yardstick through the wire of the cage and raised the rabbit's midsection a few inches. Much to my surprise, a small gray kitten was nestled there. (Keep reading) |
