Dear friends, I'm writing today to share some BIG news for The Rumpus! We are now fiscally sponsored by Fractured Atlas! This means . . . Supporters can make tax-deductible donations to The Rumpus for the 1st time in the magazine's 13 year history!Once we receive at least $1,000 total in individual contributions (DONATE link here & below), we'll become eligible for grants reserved for nonprofits and groups operating under nonprofit fiscal sponsorship. There are a couple we're hoping to apply for with deadlines in mid-October, so the sooner we hit that $1,000 benchmark the better! |
Two Important Things . . . With this fiscal sponsorship, our editorial team remains the same AND we will retain complete control over the work we publish. We are still published and owned by me, Alyson Sinclair, a proud thousandaire! We are NOT a standalone nonprofit. All fiscal donations that you're planning to write off during tax time must go through our Fractured Atlas page (or by sending a check, more info below) in order for supporters to receive that benefit. |
Why now? Well, honestly, this was a long time coming. For too many years, The Rumpus has operated as a break-even magazine without accounting for an incredible amount of unpaid volunteer hours by our editors, readers, illustrators, and publishers (including Marisa Siegel our previous EiC/publisher who we are still in awe of). That's not okay. To us, sustainability means better pay for our contributors, compensation for at least a 2-3 part time staff members, and investing in a much-needed website redesign. There is a large gap between earned revenue from our Book Club subscribers, Letters in the Mail subscribers, merch sales, ads, and our still-new Membership program. All of those funds have kept us ALIVE, but we need an increase of 200% in the next two years to achieve the goals above. Fiscal sponsorship is The Rumpus trying something new that's not a paywall, overloading the site with ads, or selling the site off to a big publisher or (worse!) someone who only cares about SEO. Please help us reach at least the $1,000 benchmark! If we get past that goal, the rest will go toward a website redesign (up to $20K), and after that, we'll up our contributor pay and begin to dream bigger. We're not sure what to expect, since The Rumpus has never asked for donations in this way before. We hope you'll come through for us, so we can continue to come through for risk-taking writers and our team for years to come. Thank you x (at least, I hope) 1000! -Alyson Sinclair, Publisher, The Rumpus |
*If you'd prefer to mail a check instead of making an online donation* please contact Alyson Sinclair @ [email protected] for information & instructions. Checks need to be mailed to our NC P.O. Box and made out to "Fractured Atlas" for donors to receive a tax benefit. If you’re curious to learn more about what fiscal sponsorship is or isn’t, find more information here. |
