Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Fox News Anchors

By any measure it was a very good day at for the news department at Fox. They announced a first town hall event with President Donald Trump to be hosted on the cable news network, moderated by anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum.

Cynics might scoff at the idea that booking the president for a Fox New event is a "get" since President Trump has availed himself for Fox's opinion hosts so regularly. But he rarely subjects himself to the network's news division, and you can expect Baier and MacCallum to ask serious questions.

Not satisfied with just a Trump town hall, Fox followed by announcing another one with Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg, set for Monday, March 2nd

What's more, as if to prove that the news anchors at Fox can fairly call balls and strikes with this administration, Chris Wallace reminded viewers why he's respected as a nonpartisan journalist when he provided pretty cutting analysis on Trump's coronavirus press conference from Wednesday night.

Speaking with Ed Henry, Wallace noted that Trump "clearly" didn't "ease people’s concerns” with his press event "because the next day the markets fell, what, 1200 points, the biggest single-day drop in the history of the Dow Jones. Today it’s down what, another 973, you know we’re going to be down several thousand points this week."

MEDIA LOSER:
Fox News Opinion Hosts
One of the more insidious trends to come from the spate of opinion-based news programming is the incessant finger-pointing at one political party for politicizing whatever issue is in the headlines.

Take for instance Fox News opinion hosts who, over the course of the last 12 hours, effectively parroted President Trump's anti-news rhetoric and suggested that coronavirus coverage was only designed to hurt Trump politically. In other words "stop playing politics by responsibly reporting the news." To wit:

Fox Business’ Trish Regan called for putting aside partisan differences during the ongoing public health crisis, seconds before ... lashing out at CNN for trying to “stoke a national coronavirus panic”?

Pete Hegseth shamelessly told Fox & Friends that "Democrats and the media are rooting" for the deadly coronavirus to spread to hurt the president politically.

And of course primetime stalwarts Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham got into the act, lacing into the media covering the potential pandemic, only seeing the coverage through their own partisan lens, while oddly criticizing others for the same. Physicians, heal thyself.

Look, opinion hosts are watched for their opinions. Nothing wrong with that. But a little self-awareness in criticizing others for playing politics, when you are playing politics yourself, goes a very long way.

The A-Block

Do Democrats Want Millions of People to Die?

You might have that impression if you watched Fox's opinion shows in the last 24 hours.

Fox News primetime was all-in on bashing Democrats and the media for allegedly overhyping fears of a coronavirus outbreak on Thursday night. Hannity mocked alarmist coverage of the virus and Ingraham accused Democrats of "rooting" for American suffering.

Nutty stuff.

Donald Trump Jr. took things to 11 in an appearance on Fox & Friends Friday morning in which he claimed Democrats are hoping coronavirus "comes here and kills millions of people so that they could end Donald Trump’s streak of winning."

He called it "a new level of sickness.” Hmm.

CNN Calls Out Fox News, Trump Calls Out CNN

The lunacy on Fox opinion programs surrounding the potential pandemic was the subject of criticism over on CNN.

Brian Stelter called Fox's coverage "reprehensible." We're tempted to agree.

Trump made sure to target CNN during a Chopper Talk with reporters on Friday afternoon, accusing the network of “doing everything they can to instill fear in people."

The president dismissed worries about the administration's preparedness for the virus as "politics."

The Chris Matthews Problem

Chris Matthews has come under fierce criticism this week for his on-air antics, starting with controversial comments about Bernie Sanders and peaking with an interview with Elizabeth Warren that was deemed sexist.

On Friday, a regular MSNBC guest accused Matthews of sexually harassing her off-air.

Laura Bassett, a writer for GQ, had written a piece in 2017 accusing an anonymous cable news host of making inappropriate comments. On Friday, she revealed it was Matthews.

“Why haven’t I fallen in love with you yet?” she says he told her once. “Make sure you wipe this off her face after the show. We don’t make her up so some guy at a bar can look at her like this,” she claims he said in another instance.

MSNBC did not respond to Mediaite's request for comment.

South Carolina Primary Fever

The South Carolina primary election is going down on Saturday, and it's Joe Biden's last chance to salvage any chance of wresting the nomination from Bernie Sanders, who stormed ahead in the first three states.

Biden is banking that his strong support amongst black voters (who make up the majority of the South Carolina Democratic electorate) will propel him to his first victory this election season.

Polls open in South Carolina at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m., so expect results to start coming in after that. According to FiveThirtyEight, Biden is the heavy favorite, expected to win 39 percent of the vote.

Fox News Sunday anchor Chris Wallace will be sitting down with Biden on Sunday morning, win or lose...

Must-See Clip of the Day

Dem Rep to Don Jr: Fight Me Bro!

Rep. John Garamendi (D-CA) threatened Don Jr. on MSNBC, Friday, over the Trump son's comments about Democrats wanting people to die.

MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson, after noting that the congressman seemed angry, asked about Don Jr.'s comments.

“He shouldn’t be near me when he says that,” Garamendi replied. “There would be a serious altercation.”

“That’s just totally outrageous. I can assure you there’s not a Democrat or Republican in Congress that wants anybody to be sick,” he said. “Don Jr. better not get any place close to me. It would not be a healthy situation.”

Wild stuff. Check it out here.
