It's Friday, June 17, and today's headlines include President Joe Biden signing an executive order to stamp out what critics refer to as "conversion therapy," a House Bill that provides added protection for Supreme Court justices, and "Lightyear" star Chris Evans' comments about critics of the film's same-sex kiss. | | President Joe Biden issued an "Executive Order on Advancing Equality for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex Individuals" Wednesday, which marked the middle of the month LGBT activists recognize as "pride month." The order calls on the administration to "safeguard LGBTQI+ youth from dangerous practices like so-called 'conversion therapy'—efforts to suppress or change an individual's sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression." It contends that conversion therapy is a "discredited practice that research indicates can cause significant harm, including higher rates of suicide-related thoughts and behaviors by LGBTQI+ youth." Biden also directed the Federal Trade Commission to determine "whether so-called conversion therapy constitutes an unfair or deceptive act or practice, and to issue such consumer warnings or notices as may be appropriate." | Earlier this month, Biden added "intersex" to the presidential proclamation recognizing LGBT "pride month," and in March, the President declared his support for genital mutilating surgeries and puberty blockers for children suffering from gender dysphoria. | Calif. councilman slams LGBT flag-raising at city hall | | Fresno Councilman Garry Bredefeld has denounced the raising of an LGBT pride flag at City Hall, calling the move a "disgraceful attack on traditional Christianity." During the flag-raising ceremony in the California city, the Rev. Raygan Baker of Fresno’s Big Red Church gave a prayer in which he said that "You, queer one, oh queering one, reveal the gifts of falling outside the lines." Bredefeld tweeted Sunday morning that he considered the prayer delivered by Baker at the pride flag-raising event to be a "disgraceful attack on traditional Christianity." Many are now calling for the councilman to be removed from office for speaking out against the flag and Rev. Baker's prayer. Read more. | | 27 Dems oppose House bill giving justices added security | | The United States House of Representatives has passed a bill that would increase security for U.S. Supreme Court justices as tensions mount ahead of a ruling on a Mississippi abortion case that could overturn 1973’s Roe v. Wade. The bill was introduced in the wake of a man driving from California to Maryland with plans to assassinate Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The bill was overwhelmingly approved by the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives, with 396 members voting for the measure. Twenty-seven opposed it, all of whom are Democrats. The protest, which was captured in a video posted to TikTok, showed the unclothed woman with strategically placed dark green leaves covering her private parts, chanting "abortion without apology" while another protester waved a green bandana and exclaimed, "Overturn Roe? Hell no!" Ushers at the Detroit-area church removed both protesters who continued to shout pro-abortion slogans as they were escorted out of the building. | Cultural ‘awareness’ but not woke warrior | | Christian Post Executive Editor Richard D. Land writes about the importance of not romanticizing the antebellum South, choosing instead to face the nation's full history—good and bad. In doing so, however, Land cautions that "woke" indoctrination through means such as critical race theory is also not the answer. Citing the importance of the strengths of the nation's national heritage—namely, "liberty and justice for all"—Land concludes, "Let us all pledge to each other that as fellow Americans we will diligently seek to achieve our national motto, 'E Pluribus Unum,' 'out of many, one.'" | Flores flips House seat, becomes first Mexican-born woman elected to Congress | | Thirty-six-year-old Republican Mayra Flores won the special election in Texas' 34th Congressional District Tuesday night, flipping a seat previously held by Democrat Filemon Vela Jr., who resigned in March, signaling changes in the political preferences of Hispanic voters in the region and possibly previewing a strong GOP performance in the 2022 midterm elections. On her website, Flores has characterized herself as "pro-God," "pro-life" and "pro-family." Born to migrant farmworkers, Flores moved to the U.S. when she was six and worked with her parents in cotton fields in Texas to earn extra money for clothing and supplies. Flores, who says her Christian faith "is a core part of who I am," is the first Mexican-born woman elected to Congress. | 'Lightyear' star calls critics 'idiots' destined to 'die off like dinosaurs' | | Actor Chris Evans, who voices the star character Buzz Lightyear in "Lightyear," called critics of the same-sex kiss in the film "idiots" and suggested that "those people die off like dinosaurs," adding, "the goal is to pay them no mind" and "march forward and embrace the growth that makes us human." The original 1995 "Toy Story" film, which first introduced the character of Buzz Lightyear, was voiced by comedian Tim Allen. Despite Allen's tenure as the star in the original and its sequels, the outspoken conservative was not cast for "Lightyear." | | The same-sex kiss in the Disney Pixar production is one of many recent examples of Disney promoting LGBT themes. Its 2020 film "Onward" featured a lesbian heroine in a relationship with another female character.
