2017: A year of unrest
Cue the playoff music -- it's time to bring this year to a close.

2017 has been a year of upheaval for organizations as workers from all walks of life raised their voices to express frustrations, protest inequality and call out systems of abuse. Many employers found themselves teetering as they scrambled to quell fires and manage responses.

Federal contractor Akima was criticized for firing a Virginia woman after a photo of her flipping off President Trump's motorcade went viral on social media. Akima said the woman's actions violated its social media policy and could affect its standing as a federal contractor.

Companies in Tennessee and Florida, among other states, came under fire after terminating the employment of workers who participated in February's "Day Without Immigrants" protest. Some companies responded to the criticism by noting they had warned workers beforehand that they could be fired if they missed work that day.

Hollywood found itself in the hot seat when a firestorm of sexual harassment allegations torched the entertainment industry. NBC quickly parted ways with "Today" host Matt Lauer following allegations of sexual harassment.

The good news, though, is that 2018 is looking up. Organizational leaders are moving toward changes to improve the workplace, including reexamining management practices and looking for ways to keep employees happy and motivated on the job.

What are the traits of a resilient employee?
A resilient employee is able to perform well under stress, learn continuously, and keep work and life balanced. Resiliency takes several forms. During an upswing, resilient employees are able to take advantage of market opportunities that help a company grow. During a downturn or industry disruption, resilient employees are able to remain flexible and work through challenges to help a business survive or redefine itself for changing times.
