The Deseret News' best illustrated works from 2023 celebrated the overlap of American culture, politics, society and thought. They feature topics where society struggles, triumphs, connects and conflicts.

 

Some illustrations are new ways to illustrate concepts we’ve long professed or understood: pants on fire or a new way of looking at the Utah state Capitol architectural elements.

 

Other concepts paired new things with old to create completely new ideas: the Statue of Liberty in forward motion wielding a mom-scale handbag. Two disparate voices shouting ideas from American canonized documents. Two bald eagles engaged in a free-for-all.

For 156 years, Lindquist morticians have looked forward

How has Lindquist Mortuaries, the family business John E. Lindquist currently caretakes, managed to survive through 15 and a half decades with no signs of, pardon the pun, dying?

 

“We’re a progressive bunch, always have been,” the undertaker says. “Lindquists look forward. I think that’s the secret to our success.”

 

It goes back to the very beginning, 156-plus years ago, when the original Lindquist, a furniture maker fresh off the boat from Sweden named Nils, was asked by Brigham Young to take his family and move to the hinterlands, which in 1867 meant “Logan.”
