Escaping the worst of the weather
View email online | | | | | | May 26, 2024 | | | | | | It was good weather for events in Northern Ireland yesterday such as this junior Orange parade in Bangor. But as I write this it is raining in Belfast. Even so, NI is escaping the thunderstorm warnings for much of England. There have been three tragic road deaths, one overnight of a man in his 30s in Ballyclare, one of a man in his 60s in Poyntzpass and a 17-year-old in Rathfriland yesterday. Such horrors remind me of the utter unpredictability and fragility of our lives - we can only savour our good fortune while it lasts. Gloria Hunniford, the broadcasting legend who comes from Portadown originally, has been given the freedom of Banbridge, Craigavon and Armagh council. I remember Gloria on UTV in the early 1980s, as I remember Eamonn Holmes on that channel. Sadly, Eamon is getting divorced from Ruth Langsford, weeks after we learned that Rory McIlroy is getting divorced. I suspect few people know much about Belfast's major new, coming Great Victoria Street train station so it is a good idea to send the key information on tour round the province. With regard to another big infrastructure plan, Casement Park, the prime minister said in Belfast on Friday the stadium would get more funding - but he gave no details. In football, Northern Ireland international Josh Magennis insists he has no plans to retire after he was released by Wigan Athletic. And the TT is days away and Kyle White will be there. Here is Kyle on Peter Hickman's optimism about his prospects this year. Enjoy your reading and your Sunday, Ben | |
