After a week of more rain, making this already a wetter than average March already before the month ends, it has been a mostly sunny Good Friday and Holy Saturday. The arrest and charge of Sir Jeffrey Donaldson for historic sex offence has rocked not just politics but Northern Ireland. The interim leader of the DUP says it is a devastating moment but the party has faith in the criminal justice system, a reaction utterly at odds with how some other parties react to police investigations of their members. Professor Jon Tonge says this development is a big challenge for the DUP while I wonder if it could kickstart a realignment within unionism. Will Sir Jeffrey continue as Lagan Valley MP? In the meantime he has been suspended by the Orange Order. Enjoy your day. I will send another email including lighter reading material about Easter tomorrow. Ben |
