| This cultural initiative, part of the ‘2M: Mathematics and Music’ project, will take place at the "Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga" Conservatory in Bilbao, featuring two categories: violin and piano. The closing ceremony will be held on June 28 at the Sociedad Bilbaina. The main objective of the competition is to promote mathematical and musical culture and to encourage the musical development of young pianists and violinists. The initiative is part of Bilbomath, a collaboration agreement between Bilbao City Council and BCAM aimed at promoting internationalization and innovation in talent attraction. Participants are free to choose their repertoire. Registrations are now open to pianists and violinists born between 1993 and 2017. Competition rules are available at this link. Prizes will include concerts at the Sociedad Bilbaina and the Bilbao Conservatory, along with scholarships ranging from €500 to €1,000. The event is organized with the collaboration of Bilbao City Council; UPV/EHU; the "Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga" Conservatory of Bilbao; Sociedad Bilbaina; and Ikerbasque, the Basque Foundation for Science. Artistic Direction: Luca Fanelli (Ikerbasque Research Professor, UPV/EHU and BCAM; pianist) Co-Artistic Directors: Ales Larrazabal (Bilbao Conservatory; pianist); Rubén Darío Reina (RTVE Orchestra; violinist); Maite Villate (Bilbao Conservatory; pianist) |

| On April 7th, BCAM hosted a seminar focused on patient transportation, organized by its Combinatorial Optimization research line. The event featured Ángel Ruiz Bartolome from Laval University (Canada) as the guest speaker. Ángel Ruiz Bartolome has collaborated with BCAM’s researchers María Merino and Imanol Gago in their work within the health project BMTF - Basque Modeling Task Force. This seminar provided valuable insights into the current challenges in patient transportation and emphasized the importance of optimizing resource management to improve efficiency and service quality in both emergency and non-emergency contexts. |

| These visits are part of "Matematikhariak," BCAM's outreach program, aimed at inspiring STEM vocations among students visiting the center. Luca Fanelli ((Ikerbasque Research Professor at UPV/EHU / BCAM Linear and Non-Linear Waves) worked with Txomin Aresti Leioa. Students had the chance to interactively explore mathematical applications while they answered different challenges or played with ‘Slinky’ to learn more about longitudinal and transverse waves. Matteo Croci (Ikerbasque Research Fellow and Ramón y Cajal Fellow/ Mathematical Design, Modelling and Simulations area) and Ana Fernandez Navamuel (Postdoc Fellow Mathematical Design, Modelling and Simulations) engaged with IES Ballonti. Students learned that mathematics helps understand how brain fluids and their solutes move to study Alzheimer's disease; it is in supercomputers that predict the weather; and it helps predict failures and detect damage to structures using sensor data, among many other applications. They also got to know about the ORE4CITIZENS project, which brings renewable marine energies closer to the public with different recreational and educational proposals. |

Aguiar, M., Steindorf, V., Srivastav, A.K., Stollenwerk, N., Kooi, B.W Bifurcation analysis of a two infection SIR-SIR epidemic model with temporary immunity and disease enhancement. This study presents a two-infection SIR-SIR model incorporating waning immunity during the first infection and enhancement or protection effects in recurrent infections. Bifurcation analysis identifies two codim-2 bifurcations as organizing centers. A cusp bifurcation describes the transition from disease-free to endemic equilibrium. Analytical solutions provide geometric insights into stationary dynamics, while a Bogdanov-Takens point reveals oscillatory endemic dynamics and a homoclinic connection. Read the pape here |

IKUR Quantum Colloquium 8 May Paraninfo, Faculty of Science and Technology (FCT/ZTF), University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), Leioa.. More info IKUR Quantum Talks are organized by the DIPC, the UPV/EHU and BCAM to raise awareness of the scientific basis and potential of quantum technologies. Prof. Rainer Blatt (University of Innsbruck, IQOQI, AQT GmbH) will review the foundational principles of quantum information processing and provide insights into the current status of the Innsbruck trapped-ion quantum computer. Using strings of trapped ions, his team implements a quantum information processor capable of quantum operations, simulations, and measurements. The talk will explore analog and digital quantum simulations, highlight applications in quantum metrology through entanglement-enhanced Ramsey interferometry, and address the implementation of fault-tolerant logical gates. Additionally, Prof. Blatt will discuss the development of a commercially available NISQ-type quantum processor through Alpine Quantum Technologies (AQT). | |
