| | CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF PALGA | To celebrate the 50th anniversary of PALGA, the Dutch Society for Pathology (NvvP) gives special attention to PALGA in their Magazine. |
|
Locating, requesting and obtaining pathology samples data on behalf of the research community requires an extensive infrastructure. The solution in the Netherlands began with the establishment of the Dutch network and registry of histo- and cytopathology (PALGA) in 1971. The special issue of NvvP Magazine, (the NvvP themselves are celebrating their centenary), also describes how the Dutch National Tissue Archive Portal further increased the availability of pathology tissue for health research. NvvP Magazine (in Dutch; page 8) Also check: About PALGA a portal to more efficient health research, on how it all came about and works in practice. |

RESEARCHERS SEEK CONTACT WITH DUTCH BIOBANKS TO EXPLORE AND COMPARE POLICIES | A group of social science researchers working for UKBiobank, the University of Southampton (UK) and the University of Groningen/UMCG is asking biobanks to help answer their research questions. The research questions aim to complement rather than repeat similar studies that have explored biobank policies in Europe and internationally, for example, those of BBMRI. The resarchers are exploring and comparing different population/cohort biobank policies. Read more |

PROF. ELINE SLAGBOOM ELECTED NEW MEMBER OF KNAW | BBMRI.nl congratulates Eline Slagboom on her election as a member of the KNAW. Academy members, leading researchers from across all the disciplines, are selected for their scientific and scholarly achievements. Eline Slagboom has devoted her career to studying the genetic factors that stimulate healthy ageing and the biomarkers in blood that reveal biological age and are related to metabolism, inflammation, and the body’s bacterial composition. She has broadened her approach in recent years as a board member of Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure (BBMRI.nl), in which she has initiated national studies on biomarkers and linked them to lifestyle interventions. The new Academy members will be installed on Monday September 13th. Read more |

SAVE THE DATE FOR EUROPE BIOBANK WEEK 2021 | Going digital in 2020 was a departure for Europe Biobank Week and a great success. #EBW21 will again go fully digital This year’s theme ‘Biobanking for our Future – Opportunities Unlocked’. So save November 8-10, 2021, for #EBW21 and the chance to learn the latest in biobanking and related fields, whether for human health or environmental needs. EBW is jointly organised by ESBB and BBMRI-ERIC. Further information |

PROF. ANNELIEN BREDENOORD ON ETHICS AND BIOBANKS | The use of tissue and data for research purposes involves ethical questions: what kind of consent is appropriate for the storage of tissue and data? Can that tissue just be grown into cell lines? And who actually owns that material, and can people earn money from it? These and other ethical questions were discussed in the Stokvis Lecture 2021 by prof. Annelien Bredenoord at the Boerhaave Museum in Leiden on April 22. The lecture on Ethics and Biobanks by Annelien Bredenoord (in Dutch) can still be watched on youtube. |
